I was generating random maps in the editor lately and was wondering to myself what the big difference is between these maps. There is no full map printout as far as I know so its hard to put them side by side to see.

According to the wiki, the difference is that Hill Country is a completely landlocked map while Highlands "Sometimes" has a river crossing on it. ... So, at least about 80% of the time, none Unless there is something else important that I have been missing.

Hill Country also has more cliffs I think.

Sometimes Highlands can have multiple rivers and even a large sea on one side of the map, if I'm remembering it correctly.

Hmm, I clicked generate nearly 100 times just now with my eye on the minimap and never saw any river or sea on highlands. Tiny, large or gigantic.

Didn't UPatch change Highlands or something? Are you using UPatch?

You should otherwise be seeing some rivers. The seas (or lakes) are pretty rare, but should still come up eventually. I think "Random Map" in the Scenario Editor might cycle through the same sets of seed numbers when you keep clicking "generate," so maybe you just happened to get stuck on a bunch of random maps that don't have water.

Ah, should have mentioned I was using the upatch.

I have to wonder what was the point of the Upatch people actually REDUCING the differences between Hill Country and Highlands, as this game maps are already a bit too similar to eachother as it is. But hey, maybe they just hate water maps as badly as me

From what I remember, I think the reasoning for the change was that Highland is generally flatter while Hill Country has far more hills (hence the name), which can sometimes be problematic for building purposes. I was cycling through some random maps for each map type and still saw a decent amount of hills for Highland, but I guess there still shouldn't be as many hills as there are in Hill Country? It was difficult for me to tell.
