My favourite map is Hill Country because... I hate water maps... And my least favourite map is Islands, because... I hate water maps...

I kind of forgot how short on maps this game is compared to the other games of the franchise for a secound .

Coastal. I like the mixture of water and narrow landscapes.

Least favorite: islands. Especially in DE.

Mediterranean is all I need. I love water maps, I feel naval warfare is more balanced than land one.

I kind of like Islands as I can usually build up a decent base without getting attacked too often. Fishermen can be useful and trade ships are good later on. I might use that for Yamoto, Choson and Shang in solo games. Not my favourite, though. I usually try to pick a random map to suit the civilisation, EG for Assyrian, Sumerian and Hittite vs Babylonian I might choose Rivers or Oasis.

But my favourite is probably Gigantic with 8 players, default settings but Conquest victory! I don't much like Highlands or Hills.

I'll have to learn how to make my own maps one day.

Hmmmm, I am not sure of whether I would classify Islands as a "defensive" map. Honestly, most of the reason why I dislike most water maps is because of how hard is it to wrestle control out of the seas if the opponent gets it early on. You cannot exactly build walls and towers around your docks to buy you more time to build a navy before your opponent counterattacks

My favorites are coastal and inland, a little water is nice for fishing and breaking up the land-locked monotony.

Least favorite is large/small islands, too much water is a bad thing in AOE. Trading is an awful way to artificially lengthen a multiplayer match in my opinion.

Narrows is hands down the best one. It offers an element of unpredictability lacking in most maps.

Hill Country seems pretty overrated to me, it's all hillberries and CA civ dominance.

I'm going to go left-field and say Rising Tide.

Coastal, as it allows navies, but still is mostly a land map. It has a nice balance to it.

Least favorite is small islands, it has very low resources and it is extremely difficult to break a stalemate. AOE island maps should have more extra islands with resources. An archipelago-like map would be a great addition to AoE.

I didn't play the random maps much, actually. Mostly the ES missions and also the premade maps, the two of which come to mind are Come and Get Me and also Hostile Lands, likely the two I played the most.
