For those of you with Win 7, there is a graphics problem commonly. Namely, your system is too advanced for AOE1 and so the graphics are defective. The waters twinkle with red and green spots, for example.
The only way I have found to fix this is to use the task manager to turn off explorer.exe each time I load up the game. It is extra work I wish I didn't have to do each time though, so I wish I knew a better way.
It also works on AOE 1 and many other 256-color games. If you're in doubt, you can always make a backup of the game executable before applying the patch.
Also, there's CustomizeAOE that was already mentioned and AOE UPatch HD also fixes this issue.

This is great advice, Ris1ng! You and the other here are very creative engineers at using this awesome old game.
May I please ask about another problem?
When I run the game to play the Lost Sumeria campaign, the game pauses every 15 seconds for 3 seconds. The only way I've found to fix this is by using Safe Mode. In regular mode, I run Taskbar and use only core essential programs/processes/Apps.

May I please ask if you have advice? I turn off Norton and disconnect from the web when I try.

If I run it in Compatibility Mode for Win XP, then the red water sparkles show up, even if I have Screen Resolution on, but the game doesn't seem to freeze.
But if don't use Compatibility mode and I use Screen resolution or Direct Draw, then it glitches every 5-15 seconds, even though the water color is fixed.
Maybe I need to it run it in "Windowed Mode" with something like ROCKNROR to make BOTH the water color right and the game run without freezing.
