I personally love water maps, especially when I have a civ with a ship bonus. Blowing up enemies with Triremes and Juggernauts is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me.

Naval battles can really be epic. I think on water, more than on land, attack formations and strategies matter more than unit bonuses.

Also I feel that age advancement in water maps can be faster than in land based maps because save food: you can use fishing boats (that cost wood) to collect food instead of training more villagers to do so.

Water maps give you more freedom and options, however they also open a new front of battle and maybe that's why many won't like them.

I've never been able to properly micro juggernauts in my fleet unless I'm already winning. I always end up destroying my own triremes with these bad boys -- with the "oh my god no" moment during which the explosive stone is flying mid-air before crushing my dearly ships...

^^ This. And the CPU doing a "hit and run" with fishing boats is hilarious.

I like continental and mediterranean maps. Water control can make you win the game, but if you focus too much on water you lose land and essentially lose the game.

Aoe2 water is different though. The most problem I've had with aoe2 water battles is that too many ships easily laggs the game almost to the point where it's unplayable.

i love water maps. although water control wont always win the map. it very much does very. IF its conti, then EARLY EARLY EARLY water control can win it yes, defintely if it is a river conti based map. same with medit. however in both conti and medit if no rivers, if your enemy cant hit a good bronze or iron water is not truly useful anymore. i have seen many games and played many where i lost water in a team game and won in the end simply because i had more wood to use in the long run. If a map seperates lands by rivers then boats are like gods. a mass amount can shred armies as they try to cross while you simply mass up and raid all day. Without rivers, i dont need to worry about bypassing boats or gaining food. the biggest advantage you have is maybe a quicker brz or iron depending on your civ. But it gives me clarification typically that ur not rushing ether, and if i have for example romans, im rushing hard so in the end u may have sea, but sea is useless if u cant stop a rush or a player with a good land bonus like romans or assy or yamy. much less a sumi vil rush. Minoans yes are amazing at sea with hitt as well.
