I hadn't played the game in years, and after recently finding out about UPatch I reinstalled and am excited to play again. I find this game so elegant and beautiful.

I have some questions. Is this forum the center of activity for the AoE 1 community? Are there any other sites I should know about?

It looks like a lot of the reading materials available are very dated. Are there any guides for someone seeking to get acclimated to the current state of gameplay? For example, what can I read to learn how to begin to develop competence in multiplayer? I know there are lots of articles in the granary, and I've read several, but the dust seems to lie pretty thick there.

What are the means for playing multiplayer? I gather that most of the activity is on something called Voobly . . .?

I was very excited to find that AoE is a thriving esport in Vietnam. I've been watching a lot of GameTV. Are there any other ways to watch high-level play? The lack of English commentary and the frequency of POV shifting makes the matches incredibly hard to follow. Is there any interaction between the English- and Vietnamese-speaking communities?

Finally, is there a quick way to find the best user-created content? The Doom community, which is still thriving beautifully if you didn't know, has the "Cacowards", which are given out yearly to the highest-rated projects in a range of categories. Perhaps some good forum threads where people are listing their favorite maps and mods?

There are some other more-alive AoE communities, but they are all for AoE2 or AoE3. As far as I know this is the main place for AoE1 (in the English speaking part of the internet at least).

A lot of the materials here are dated because the site dates back to the '90s. I don't think there are many new materials because the number of active users here is so low.

However please stick around, new forumers are always a good thing (unless they are spambots).

Anything by Ingo van Thiel and Andrea Rosa. Also most of the Top Rated stuff in the Granary (downloads section) is worth your time.

what about AoM :P?

yes there is voobly wich is used for AoE; still, there are only about 50 people on in the same time and there are 5-10 active people on this forum; wich is I think in deed the biggest forum of the english AoE 1.

Again, AOE1 is not dying. It's popularity is actually rising in the last year and a half. How could a dying game get over 9000 downloads for its unofficial patch (final version) in only 4 months?? Not counting the 23 000 downloads for the Beta version achieved in just one year.

GameRanger usually has more Rise of Rome players than Voobly, Garena has even more players (but mostly from Asia, so it might be a little difficult to understand each other). In China and Vietnam there are thousands of players, but they have their own MP client (not English). Also check this thread.

I agree that the game/community isn't dying. And even this forum seems reasonably active to me.

Complaining about how things are dying is just part of the HG culture, you should try to ignore it.
