The Conquerors and Forgotten Empires: play and feel like very different games than AOE. Yet whenever I played vanilla years ago, it always felt like Age of Empires II. I can easily feel how AOE turns into AOK turns into AOC - but try going from AOE and then AOC? Not so much. Sometimes I feel AOK is closer to AOE, not always but sometimes.

What is it? We're talking about AOE in THIS TOPIC AT AOKHEAVEN and I think we could use some input from you guys.

I wrote a bit about why I think about this disconnect, but I am not writing very good

Lol I hope you are joking, flip3570. I have to admit that maybe the activity of the AoKH is what is keeping the HG site alive lol.

Yes here in HG we got a big forum catalog for many different rts.

I am a bit surprised there is no Total War Rome 2, tho Yes the game was not as good as expected, but I felt it was not terrible. Also the same studio is making a Warhammer one. I hope the owners of the site add them to inject more activity to the site.

There is a Total War Rome 2 Heaven here. It will probably be the last Heaven ever made because nobody used it (the place was basically dead right from the beginning). I've already been told by Terikel (one of the people that run Heavengames) that there won't be a Total War: Warhammer Heaven due to the failure of the Rome II one.

Basically we've had a lot of discussions about the future of Heavengames on the Outside Discussions forums (on the HeavenGames main site) and the clear overwhelming sentiment in all of them is that basically nobody has the time or energy to revitalise HeavenGames anymore.

The attitudes of Terikel and Civis Romanus were basically "we put a lot of effort into Rome II Heaven and got nothing out of it; HeavenGames is dying and nobody we know of can invest the necessary time and energy to fix it" (paraphrased based on several long-winded posts).

I can link you the particular threads if you want.

Well that really sucks. But I think it is in good part because the rts genre is not what it used to be. I think lots of people moved to console and phone games and those platforms are not nice for the rts genre.

True, especially phone games suck. 90% of all games are free to play and graphics 4 tha win, and it's true that a lot of people move to other platforms. But there's that one exception :P Minecraft, the game that everyone plays and most people play it on the PC.

I think if ensemble studios didn't stop in 2007, they would make by now already AoE 4, AoE 5 and maybe AoM 2 and then the franchise would be still alive and still be popular..... But when there isn't anything happening for 5 years (AoE III asian dynasties 2007 - AoE II forgotten empires 2012) then everyone was moving, everyone moved to another game, everyone fell in love with something else and almost everyone was simply gone. Now, in 2015 AoM and AoE2 has a HD version and a new expansion pack. But you have to think like this: the hole game, has still the SAME possibilities as the game of 1999 (age of empires 2) and 2002 (AoM).
Dota II, Leage of legions (idk how to spell) and other RTS games. Have more possibilities, are newer, are getting updated frequently. So that's why they're popular, and popular games keep growing.

this is my theory.....

I think this francise will last still a very long time, but when all the fans die (I expect most people to be 20-30 years old) then the game is dead......

Well you forgot to mention Age of Empires Online, which failed to get the gamers' attention.

I see Age of empires online as a non-age of empires game. I don't say it sucks, but I think it's not part of our franchise.

Yes, AOEO was a little too far from the style of the previous AOE games, but it's still much more part of the series than the recently released mobile games (AOE Castle Siege and what was the other one?), which have nothing to do with AOE and simply abuse the name.

Still, AoEo is still far from being a real AoE game, because of the RPG, free to play, online only, etc, etc, etc

@aoe_scout, I know you said "recently released mobile games," but maybe you were thinking of "Age of Kings" on DS?

No, I'm not familiar with this one. I meant "Age of Empires: Castle Siege" and "Age of Empires: World Domination" (both officially licensed by MS to use the name). I haven't played them, but from the videos and descriptions it's quite obvious that these games are nothing like the AOE we all know and love. In fact, you can probably find many other mobile games (not called AOE) that are much closer to AOE in style than these 2.
