Sometimes when you tell people you still play Age of Empires, they are surprised. Why do you still play an older computer game?

Yesterday, I was in a store buying a weed eater and computer games came up while I was at the cash register. I mentioned to The cashier, who was probably in his late 20's (I am bad with ages), that I like RTS games. He responded, "I love Age of Empires too." I said, "how did you know it was that game?" We did not have much time to talk because there was someone behind me, but he mentioned that he was using the HD patch (thanks aoe-scout!).

So that got me thinking. People still play games that are much older than Age of Empires, like checkers, chess, poker, Risk, etc. Why can't a computer game be a classic just like those games, where the age of the game doesn't mean much? I suppose it can be.

I play AoE because it's fun, entertaining, beautifully crafted, creative, strategic...

I love AoE 1 and AoM, sadly, I suck at it and have no friends to play with it. So I in stead play AoM. I still like to talk about it and think about it

yes, it's one of the biggest classics

Yes, AoE is a classic, no matter what. But I doubt the 20's guy was referring to AoE tho. For the average person Age of Empires means AoK. Actually rather few western hemisphere people under 25 have played the original AoE. Just like Street Fighter and Assassin's Creed, people know there is a 1 version but they have only played the 2 and onwards.

But hey, I could be wrong!

Suppiluliuma, I'm 13 xD?.

But it's probally just because I played it a lot with my father, and he was a fan of it.

And pathfish, I can't agree more!

I guess the same could be said about Sonic 2, which I prefer over the original.

I do like the multiplayer part of AoK morem (AoE:HD is a lot of fun), but when it comes to designing or a casual game AoE takes the crown.

Yeah, when he said "HD patch" he probably meant AoK:HD (it's basically a Steam re-release of AoE2).

AOE2:HD was advertised as a completely new release and I think the mere fact that's on Steam is enough for people not to mistake it for a HD patch.

But it's true that when most people say "Age of Empires" they usually mean AOE2. Probably because AOE1 is quite old and most people started playing the series from AOE2 (or even AOE3), which quickly became more popular than AOE1.

Let's be honest here, the HD edition was just a re-release with a few issues fixed.

This is true in general, except amongst those of us who got AoE1 for free in a box of cereal (it was a nation-wide promotional campaign from what I remember - they also gave out CDs for other games like Supreme Snowboarding and VRally 2).

Disagree, I think age of empires 1 has some awesome features, that the other AoE games haven't got (toptier units/towers and my favorite: playing as the same person)
Sadly the game lacks graphics and units, of course we love the graphics and units. But I think AoE 2 took the show with their units, graphics and campaign. But I like the simplicity of it. But I think, that I missed a lot of hype of the AoE serie, I was still playing it with my dad, isolated from the internet (we hadn't wifi yet, at least, my father never really showed me it for some reason) when ensemble studios shut their doors (I was still 5 years old) , I wish I was playing it with my friends in the basement, I don't like the current state of the games these days, it's all so competetive right now.....

Yes, AoE1 is definitely better than AoE2 in many areas (especially the water graphics) and I do prefer it. However the majority of people sadly believe the opposite.

When I was 6 - 8 years old, I made a lot of maps (you know, your usual 6-8 year old newbie maps), I always prefered the age of empires 1 editor.

Haha, here's what I did when I was little: I would cover almost the entire map (huge, I think) in units from 8 players who are all enemies and just watch them all kill each other. And of course it would go incredibly slow until a whole bunch of the units had been killed.

I prefered filling it with towers and wonders xd
