I heard some people stating that cats and hcats get the same damage area even though it's not like that the manual. Well, I started testing in the scenario editor and came up with these results. I tested the damage area's by attacking a whole block of walls and then checked which wall segments where damaged.
STONE THROWER:
-> small damage area
-> 2 by 2 tiles = 4 tiles in total
CATAPULT
-> large damage area
-> 4 by 4 tiles - 2 tiles = 14 tiles in total
HEAVY CATAPULT
-> same as catapult, plus it can destroy trees
CATAPULT TRIREME
-> medium damage area
-> 3 by 3 tiles - 1 tile = 8 tiles in total
JUGGERNAUGHT
-> same as heavy catapult
Also do note that the attack damage doesn't decrease further away from the "hit spot". In case of the heavy catapult, all 14 wall segments where destroyed at the same time.
SCYTHE CHARIOT, WAR & ARMORED ELEPHANT
-> 1 tile damage area against units
-> 2 tiles damage area against walls (buildings, towers?)
