Hi AoE fans,
After many years, I decided to play the original scenarios again in campaign mode and realized that there are bunch of misinformation in the scenarios. I'm sure, some of you have discovered some of them already. I think, here we can talk about them and make a discussion.
If you play AoE1 without paying attention to historical background of scenarios, it's almost perfect especially for its relased year. BUT when you search the accuracy of the provided infos, unfortunately it's full of fails. These are what I found:
*Yamato campaign, first mission (The Assassins):
There are two heroes in this scenario, Perseus and Xerxes. Well, Perseus is known only in Greek mythology and Xerxes is the name of famous Persian king in history between 486-465 BC. But this scenario is supposed to be in Japan 365 AD and it is all about the wars between Yamato and Izumo clans. Perseus had to be "Takeru" or "Yamatotakeru", who is the most possible person for this scenario, although he lived and died 200 years before the date of this scenario. No idea how to rename Xerxes.
Also, there is no "Historical Notes" in this scenario. Developers have copied the same text in "Historical Outcome". Quite weird. Any idea how is the real text?
*Babylon campaign, 4th mission (I Shall Return):
There are two fails in this scenario. First one is about the civilizations in the game. In this map, the Elamites are invading the Babylonia. You know, both of Elam and Babylon cultures were in southeast of Mesapotamia. But both are set as Greek civ in this map. Nonsense..
The second fail is, Hero Alexander (a.k.a. Alexander the Great) in this map. He is controlled by the computer as an Elam, although he was Greek. He really invaded the Babylonia in his rule, but it had no relevance with Elamite invade. And he lived between 356-323 BC, although this scenario is in 1125 BC.
*Greek campaign, 6th mission (Siege of Athens):
This one is a nice scenario but it has many flaws as you know. For example, the famous Hero 12. It's obviously a forgotten unit to be named. In my opinion, the most suited hero from history is Greece king and general, Pericles who were in charge in the first years of Siege of Athens (a.k.a. Peloponnesian War)..
Another hero in this scenario is Hero Jason. The only known Jason in Greek history was a mythological character who has never lead the Spartans. Also, no idea why is he wearing like Egyptians in this scenario.. If we don't care about his apperance, in my opinion he had to be named as one of three Spartan generals in Peloponnesian War, Brasidas.
*Scenario instructions maps in Babylon campaign:
Babylon wasn't a very successful kingdom at all. In their history they conquered and lost the same cities several times, even their own capital. But in scenario instructions maps, only the captured lands are shown, even when they don't have the control of these lands anymore.
*Computer players' names in Random Map/DM:
If you set the Sumerians as computer player, the possible player name will be "Sargon, Sargon II, Sargon III" etc.. In history, only Assyrians and Akkadians had rulers with the name, Sargon. Sumerians never had a leader with this name.
These are the ones I remember for now. I may write more as soon as I remember or find out. I didn't begin the AoE-RoR yet, but please feel free to share your comments about fails in AoE1 or RoR both.
Cheers
