We've released an upgrade for Age of Empires and Rise of Rome (completely free), that we're calling AoE HD and RoR HD. Many folks are very excited about these patches so I thought I'd share it with you. The full details are at http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/aoehd.

The key features include upgrading the game engine to support modern resolutions, including high definition resolutions 19201080, and widescreen displays (the original versions only supports up to 1024x768 resolution). Along with many other features.

List of Age of Empires HD & Rise of Rome HD features include:

  • High Definition Resolution - Full HD and widescreen resolutions are available.
  • NAT traversal - Major upgrading of the game's networking so you do not need to forward ports.
  • 300 - 1000 Population Limits - You can select population limits up to 1000, including 300, 350, 400, 450, 600, 900, 1000 limits.
  • New Map Sizes (AoE only) - You can select gigantic map sizes (60% more playable area than huge!) and a new map size between large and huge called "extra large", another map size extra huge is added between huge and gigantic.
  • Random Civilizations - You are able to select "random civilization" where a random civ is selected each player in the game gets a unique civ chosen at random.
  • Mirrored Civilizations - This option allows each team to receive the same civilizations as the other team, providing a more even match up in your game by eliminating the possibilities of having a team with all weak civilizations. So, e.g.: in a two vs. two the civs that are chosen might be Minoan and Greek and each team will have one person as Minoan and Greek.
  • Random Teams - When you select ?, the game will randomly match up the players on each team to make it 1v1,2v2,3v3,4v4,etc.
  • Random Map Type - Instead of having to choosing a map type (Small Islands, Highland, etc) you can now select "Random" and a map type will be chosen at random.
  • New Map Types [list] - Age of Empires HD: You can now choose highland with rivers (shallows) and without. This fixes a major problem many users faced with deathmatch games. Rise of Rome HD: You can now choose continental with rivers (shallows) and without.
  • Colored Chat Text - chat text will show in the color of the players name.
  • Population Overlay - pop/houses/poplimit now shown in F11 status text so you don't need to continually check houses.
  • Multiple Monitor Support - If you have multiple screens you can now enable the multi-monitor support on Voobly and the game will span across all your screens. The only requirement is that you set your the monitor on the left as the primary display within Microsoft Windows display settings.
  • Anti-Cheat - Voobly has spent over 7 years developing and updating the only working Anti-Cheat System for the Age of Empires Series to provide the best protection against all cheats. (Including maphack or nofog)
  • Window-Mode - It is possible to launch in window-mode, simply click the "Game" button in your game room and select "Directx" and check the "Render in 32bit color" and the "Start in window-mode".

    Some Screenshots (more below):

    High Definition Resolution
Full HD and widescreen resolutions are available. For more information read the Widescreen and Multi-Monitor guide.

The following screenshots have the original game's max display resolution (1024x768) marked with red lines.

Here is another view, that shows playable area per player in game. Cells with red border is what was possible before, cells with blue background shows what you can do now. Notice it's more consistent for playable area for 4v4 and 2v2.

    Random Civilizations
You are able to select "random civilization" where a random civ is selected each player in the game gets a unique civ chosen at random.

    Random Mirror Civilizations
This option allows each team to receive the same civilizations as the other team, providing a more even match up in your game by eliminating the possibilities of having a team with all weak civilizations. So, e.g.: in a two vs. two the civs that are chosen might be Minoan and Greek and each team will have one person as Minoan and Greek.

    Random Teams

When you select ?, the game will randomly match up the players on each team to make it 1v1,2v2,3v3,4v4,etc.

You can choose to disable this feature through the game menu.

    Population Overlay (AoE HD only)
Pop/# of Houses/Poplimit now shown in F11 status text so you don't need to continually check houses. This feature is only applicable to Age of Empires HD.

You can choose to disable this feature through the game menu.

That's quite an interesting array of new options, and I guess having access to them probably affects the way many people play the game. Too bad I'm just not active at the MP scene at all anymore.

I don't think you've already done this work.
I've not found how to play any resolution I want with a patching tool (no downloading of anything or file overwriting, etc), without subscribing to anything.
I've not found how to play RoR with customized (and independant) options that solve major issues of the game (no diplomacy change, etc) with a simple and free to use patching tool.
All these options being compatible between them, and with others options from other modders.

If you're talking about hardcoding custom resolutions in AoE/RoR, others did it before you, so maybe you're the ones that are re-coding existing things.
Please note that I didnt invent anything, I only (strongly) improved unfinished work that seemed to be abandoned (got no response from the author).

Moreover I'm sharing all information I have to the community. Are you doing the same ?
I'm not pretending anything, just trying to improve things. You too, so show it.
I'd be glad to contribute in new areas (as I did a little bit for AGE3). Just tell me where I can find information about what voobly community did and that will give me a good starting point (as also for other modders).

Your work with DLL files is very interesting, and impressive. It gives us extraordinary perspectives in many subjects about AOE/RoR. Could you share information that would allow modders to develop their own functions ? A "How-to" about compiling such DLL files would give modders a new way of creating all type of mods.

Sorry for the topic, I didnt want to create a duplicate one still about resolution.

Yes, in the future it would be good to just create a new one.

I second that! I couldn't find where you discussed that in Voobly forums. I'm also interested about the possibilities (although not as a programmer) and I believe at least part of the discussion should be open, not private. The community is important and I'm sure part of what you did in AOE-HD is thanks to the work of many people here at AoEH, who made it possible to modify the game.

If you start the game without Voobly, you won't get the new features. They work only with Voobly.

I'm currently working on a patch that will enable custom resolution in the game both online and offline, without any client (along with many bug fixes and improvements). The game will be patched to 1.1. Check my signature for more info and screenshots.

Sorry for the slow response, we've been heads down focusing on even more improvements over the past couple months.

    Four very significant highlights:

1.) We added support for new map sizes for AoE1, Gigantic (AoE1 didn't have gigantic), we also added a new "Extra Large" size between Large and Huge for 2v2 matches. For completeness a new "Extra Huge" size was added. We will add extra large/extra huge on RoR if there is interest (and could consider Extra Gigantic).

2.) You can now use the launch from single player feature to use Voobly patch in single player for campaigns. More details are at http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/310

We might get something completely outside Voobly one day, but AoE HD and RoR HD pulls in so much goodness from Voobly it's hard to decouple.

3.) Saving the best for last possibly, we have added support for an extremely flexible game mod framework.

    Details are at http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/153795 .

For anyone doing modding please check it out. Quick summary here is we support both :
    - local/client only mods such as texture changes, and with our SLP mod package support they can be downloaded and installed in 1-3 seconds and a single click.
    - game play / data mods - these can also be installed easily and automatically transferred to anyone joining the game room. Check out http://www.voobly.com/gamemods/mod/31/Fan-Patch-15 for example of Fan Patch in use in AoM:T on Voobly.

4.) As part of the new game mod center, we've created and released new aoe series modding tools (DRSDIFF, and LANGCONV). They are described at http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/gamemods#AoE_RoR_AoK_and_AoC_specific_modding . They are mostly targeted to helping make mods compatible on Voobly but they could be helpful outside of that.

    ---

For those that want to help, I've polled our aoe community and one thing they've requested is a balance back to make random civ more balanced, with the new game mod support, a balance pack could finally become main-stream as most users wouldn't need to do anything to use it (auto-install on joining a game room). So if your interested in helping please PM me ( http://www.voobly.com/profile/view/23 ) and Pin3 ( http://www.voobly.com/profile/view/173740 ), we'll want to work closely with the community as if we just force a patch that changes the game on them they won't like it and won't use it.

    Hi
It's really good to hear news from you

Is there any location where you shared your work, just like AGE3 (sources are available on github) ?

I'm interested to have a look at this and try some new modding. But I would need help to understand how you built your custom files (especially DLL and how to plug it to the game).
Maybe the information I collected to create binarypatcher could be useful to you too.

    See you soon.

    >> I see that the bigger the category of the map, the smaller is the relative gainings compared to the previous smaller size

I'm not sure I follow. Reasons why folks requested the map size is: Gigantic is very useful for AoE1 as huge is small for 4v4. Extra Large is useful because Large is too small and Huge is too big for 2v2. Basically, 1v1/2v2/3v3/4x4 all have different ideal sizes. Before the change people had trouble playing 2v2 and 4v4.

You can view one of the requests for this at http://www.voobly.com/forum/thread/150230

    >> Is there any location where you shared your work, just like AGE3 (sources are available on github) ?

To help modders we have released a powerful game mod framework described at http://www.voobly.com/pages/view/gamemods#AoE_RoR_AoK_and_AoC_specific_modding . Along with two new tools we wrote (drsdiff and langconv). The game mod center was a huge time investment and allows mods like balance packs to become extremely easy to use for multi-player. The possibilities now for multiplayer mods are huge. It can even be utilized for things as simple as auto-transferring custom maps.

For the other details, the entire patch is combined as one blob at the moment which includes our critical anti-cheat. I'll definitely add this request to my todo list to investigate breaking some of the stuff off -- we can't expose any details on how our A/C works for obvious reasons. Our main priorities at the moment are updating AoE w/ requests from the community, supporting mod community via new game mod center, and making Voobly a great place to play.

Although Suppy is correct about the relative differences decreasing with higher map sizes, the absolute differences in area will still be larger than they are between the smaller map sizes. For that reason I could definitely see the use of some in-between map sizes for the larger scale maps.

Always interesting to see some updates from the Voobly Community.

That's correct, perhaps this will put things in perspective:

    Large -> width=57.6 -> area=3317.76 units^2
    Huge -> width=80 -> area=6400 units^2
    Gigantic -> width=100 -> area=10000 units^2

Huge is roughly 2x playable area of Large. Gigantic is ~60% larger than huge.

I had just normalized everything to gigantic size as 100 units. But yes, your correct medium has 120x120 tiles. So you can take my widths and multiple by 2.5 to get it in tiles in the previous post.

Here is another view, that shows playable area per player in game, i.e.: (tiles ^ 2) / # of players. So for medium 1v1, it's (120*120)/2 = 7200.

Cells with red border is what was possible before, cells with blue background shows what you can do now (notice it's more consistent for playable area for 4v4 and 2v2).

Kind time of days! Still listening to suggestions?
If so, I now I have a few ideas.First of all add to game's overland trade between civilizations.
You can make an entire caravan of camels ( here is the link -
http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=2494 -you can remove the rider and instead portray a bale of goods and traders ( but not similar to the units of the game), as well as establish trading house.

Secondly add files from Tribalism Teaser (http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=2003).
And somehow did make the volcano erupt....
These simple ideas will give a chic adventure your heroes in the game.

    Good luck and creative successes.!!!

P.S.-There are more ideas, but I am not going to them right straight to voice.
