hello, now it's been like.. a year or more since I've played AOE off and on, and two or three since I've even played it more than once every few months. But still. Slingers!
Slingers are misrepresented. They can acheive greater ranges than a bow. Their power is not stopped by armor (well, actually really heavy armor , I've read, can do it. But the physical shock of such an impact might still stagger a man, not sure). Shields might do it though. Their cheap to make and get ammunition for. Just take forever to train. A clear downside is I've never heard of a slinger on horseback. They need lots of room, a lot of room, and they can't fire out of slits in fortifications or fire in arcs the same way an archer can. But Slingers can be pretty mobile - the sling is the easiest weapon to transport. (A bow is not, for several reasons: it's not just the bow, but the arrows, and the string, and the wood must be taken care of)
Now, in the game, he has 2 attack and 5 range. Even the bowman has 3 attack. In the game, he has pierce armor. I'm not sure how this actually relates to the slinger, but Ensemble Studios probably just wanted an anti-archer unit.
