hello, now it's been like.. a year or more since I've played AOE off and on, and two or three since I've even played it more than once every few months. But still. Slingers!

Slingers are misrepresented. They can acheive greater ranges than a bow. Their power is not stopped by armor (well, actually really heavy armor , I've read, can do it. But the physical shock of such an impact might still stagger a man, not sure). Shields might do it though. Their cheap to make and get ammunition for. Just take forever to train. A clear downside is I've never heard of a slinger on horseback. They need lots of room, a lot of room, and they can't fire out of slits in fortifications or fire in arcs the same way an archer can. But Slingers can be pretty mobile - the sling is the easiest weapon to transport. (A bow is not, for several reasons: it's not just the bow, but the arrows, and the string, and the wood must be taken care of)

Now, in the game, he has 2 attack and 5 range. Even the bowman has 3 attack. In the game, he has pierce armor. I'm not sure how this actually relates to the slinger, but Ensemble Studios probably just wanted an anti-archer unit.

That's it. Simply.

Best would have been to make all archer units a little bit slower, especially chariot archer.
In the game, a cavalry can track a chariot archer through an entire map without being able to hit it once, which is really... too bad !
The same for axemen vs bowmen.

I don't know what's more realistic, but what I'm searching for is a good balanced an interesting game.

Albeit Archer units have relatively low attacks (at least compared to melee units) their numbers and range give them strength. I do think they are overpowered, even in front of cavalry (which should be the prime anti archer unit). Slingers work vs slowed moving ,low ranged foot archers and watch towers, but they are pretty much useless by late bronze age if one has kept research updated.

This is only the first game in the series, and as such these problems are mere experimentation that proved unsuccessful, to be rectified in later games (AOK, AOEIII, AOM). Keep that in mind.

Something to remember: always know where you're going, but never forget where you came from.

The Age of Chivalry is upon us! Visit the only wiki devoted exclusively to Aoc:H by clicking on the preceding link. Oh yeah, and it works with the HD edition, too--just make sure to get this first.

On any case and even if used even by late Iron age armies like the Romans or the Carthaginians, I see slingers more as an injurying unit than a lethal one.
