All over the internet, when I see people saying "this is what the original AoE looked like" I see them posting screenshots that look like this.

Problem is that AoE never looked like that too me. In both my 1.0 and 1.0c versions the galley models look different, and the HP bar on units is horizontal not vertical. So what version of the game are screenshots like this from?

EDIT: Actually the entire UI is completely different. Also this guy seems to have no fog enabled.

that would probably be a beta or even alpha verssion, made before the final release and given to a few reporters and other people. I could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like.
But yea, the final versions of the original are the same

Looking at the cockroaches with masts, I can really see why they changed them.

Yeah. The vertical HP bar is also disconcerting. I remember Robot Entertainment used a comparasin screenshot between AoE1 and AoE:O where the screenshot from AoE1 had a vertical HP bar. At the time I hadn't been to phatphish's aoebeta website, so I thought "wtf haxx" lol.

EDIT: If you look closely the composite bowmen in the lower right corner look taller than they do in the final release.

The ships look different as the catapult and arrow projectiles do... also it is funny how the hp bar is vertical on the corner icon... not bad

cockroaches with masts
Lol, they do somewhat look like that haha.

Those screenshots are from a very early alpha version, they are most likely from December 1996 or January 1997. I can tell just by looking at the minimap, the terrain rendering is made up of "patches" of forest/water, with lots of empty space/tiles between them, which is similar to the late alpha build.

Lol, they even had trees in the water, without the enhanced/composite editor :P

I think it's possible to do strange things like that without enhanced editor. The idea is to put units and then change terrain, or move existing units.
I don't remember exactly what is possible or not with this method.

It seems to be a very early version, names and attributes aren't final ones (archer3, 40 HP...)

Wow, I didn't notice the trees in the water! I wonder how all these random people on the internet came across this. Do you think they actually have the early alpha version or they just copied and pasted developer's screenshots which have since been deleted at source?

The Minimap: I can't tell the difference...

Some of these shots were published in various gaming magazines and online before the game was released, so I think some people just have VERY old screenshot archives.

As Damian said, all of these particular screenshots came from the official AoE website hosted by MS.

If you have played the late alpha build, you will notice a pattern in the way random maps are generated, hence why I could tell this screenshot is from an alpha build.
The idea is to put units and then change terrain, or move existing units.
I don't remember exactly what is possible or not with this method.
The only trick that works with this method without the enhanced editor, is the academy building which will stay when rendering water underneath it.
