Since many people seem to have trouble with saved games that crash because of the missile/projectile bug, I have created this sticky so people can easily find the 1.0b patch needed to solve this problem.

If you have the AoE 1.0c or RoR 1.0a patch installed, or playing using the Collectors Edition of the game, you might expierence crashes when loading a saved game when playing certain scenario's or campaigns. This can be frustrating for scenario designers who use Missile objects in their works for example, made available through the Enhanced/Composite Editor (.dat files). If this is the case, please downgrade to these earlier versions of the game, in order to load a saved game like normal and continue without crashes or bugs.

Keep in mind that this patch "downgrades" your version of AoE/RoR, and should mainly be used for Single Player.

The 1.0b Patch:

1.0b patch

Important: When installing make sure to double check the directory path.

This patch installs the following versions of Age of Empires/The Rise of Rome Expansion:

- AoE 1.0b
- RoR 1.0

The 1.0c patches can be found here, in multiple languages.

If you have questions regarding the 1.0b patch, or the other patches, please ask them here, don't start a new topic unless you have a good reason.

Is not possible to play with 1.0c? I need to downgrade because crashes with the 1.0a of RoR, but there will be a fix for the patch 1.0c?

Unfortunately no, unless some kind of wizard from ES pops along, or some other tech savy person. Remember that ES no longer exists so there's no way there will be an official fix for this problem.

Save game crashes will be fixed with UPatch 1.1! A fix was discovered by LucTieuPhung.

Hi,
after installing patch 1.0b i'm asked for the original CD. Without your patch it works but after loading savegames the game crashes.
Do you know this problem?

I use windows 7 64 bit and the original age of empires collectors edition.

Sry for my bad english ;-)

This is not the correct topic, but I will answer:
You shouldn't install any patches to Collector's Edition. The patch you installed is for old version, which requires disc to play, while Collector's Edition doesn't require disc.

You will. Collector's edition = ROR 1.0a version (=AOE 1.0c)

You can fix it using this

The simplest solution is to install the unofficial patch (link in my signature), it solves the save game crashes, the color bug and many other problems (also gives you HD resolutions, HD quality interface, original music, etc).

My problem when I was plaxing Age of Empires - Rise of Rome expansion pack is that several times when I would save a game and later after a few minutes, hours or days try to load it an error report ocurred and I had to close the game. Than I googled it for a solution and I came across this page and so I tried to install patches b and c I think and none of that worked for me. Fortunately, I found a solution: every time I created a new save I wouldn't overwrite it but instead I would create a NEW SAVE and later on when I loaded any of them ALL OF THEM WORKED. For example I saved it like this:
Save1
Save2
Save3
...
You can do it as many times you want.
If none of the patches works for you guys than you should definitely try this.
Good luck to everyone and I hope everything will be fine!

This is exactly what I ran into. I would install that unofficial patch, but I don't want to change 100 other things, I just want the game to work...

People should know that most of the changes in the unofficial patch are bug fixes, very small part are actually balance changes (and the balance changes were carefully made to be close to the original game - all according to user feedback and surveys taken for over 2 years). And you can then simply use the unofficial patch with the UP mod for Balance from 1.0/1.0a (from here), it even restores any gameplay bugs that could affect balance (but keeps all HD features and other bug fixes).
The original game is simply full of ridiculous bugs and problems that had to be fixed many years ago, but instead the game was abandoned in this state.

Hi aoe_scout! Can you give me the technical detail about this fix please? It is a modification on the executable file or in a data file?

THANKS!
