Hello, I am posting this message on behalf of my 12yr old son. He has explained below the issue he is having with the game crashing. It would be great if someone could advise us how to resolve this problem. (In case it's relevant, our computer runs on Windows Home XP SP3).

I have the collectors edition of AoE/RoR and AoK/AoC. I am familiar with the crashing issue (when using the 1.0c/1.0a patches for AoE/RoR if you save a game when projectiles are flying, the game crashes when you load it)- so I tried the workaround mentioned in the FAQs but it didn't work for me (still had the same issue).

Next I downloaded the 1.0b/1.0 patches from the granary. When I tried to play a single player game in RoR I get a "you must insert a game CD to play a single player game, and then restart Age of Empires" message. I tried searching for a .ISO for the whole game using the 1.0b/1.0 patches but unfortunately I could only see it on "www.illegalfiles'R'us.com" type of sites!

So I am hoping that someone can maybe provide me with a 'legal' workaround for this problem or preferably a .ISO file or the files needed to run the 1.0b/1.0 patches or let me know where I can find such things - if such things exist

Many Thanks

Welcome. The workaround patch in the Granary should work even with the collectors edition of AoE/RoR, it's been tested and verified to work by several other forumers. If it doesn't work however, you can purchase AoE Gold edition (supercheap nowadays) on Ebay, Amazon etc.

You could go the "illegal" way which I would not recommend - we can't help you searching or providing links, nor can we upload images of the game and share them since that would be against the rules.

Hello PhatFish and thanks for replying.

I am thinking I must have missed something...
Do you mean the 1.0b/1.0 patch from the granary should work on XP SP3 without problems with the Ubisoft Collectors Edition?
I am wondering if my game disk (Ubisoft Collectors Edition) installed with 1.0c/1.0a patches is not compatible with the 1.0b/1.0 patches.

When I played(or rather couldn't play ) using the 1.0b/1.0 patches I had the Ubisoft Collectors Edition disk in the disk drive(actually I am using a .ISO of the game disk via Magic Disk) I clicked the single player button and I got the "you must insert a game CD to play a single player game, and then restart Age of Empires" message.

I think I am doing something wrong...
hoping you can further advise me on this issue

Many Thanks

Since you have the Collectors Edition, I am not so sure it will work. The Collectors Edition comes with their own latest patch. 1.0a for Ror and 1.0c for aoe. I am afraid it isn't possible to fix this for the Collectors Edition

Hi Phatfish

Which "workaround patch" are you referring to ? Could you give us a direct link ?
I tried 1.0c patch from the granary and saving/loading savegames didn't work (flying arrows bug...).
I have to play ROR with 1.0b version.

@AngrySpiderMa I had similar troubles, but I found a way to make it work, contact me with a private message if you want to know more.

I also own the Age of Empires Collector's Edition (DVD-ROM edition by Ubisoft) and ran into the same problem as AngrySpiderMa after downgrading the game to v1.0b. I did some research and a found a legal solution to solve this problem.

During the installation, the setup creates a registry key which points to the drive and path the game has been installed from. This value conflicts with the v1.0b CD check so it needs to be changed in order for the game to recognize the disc.

1. Run regedit.
2. Find and open the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Games\Age of Empires\1.00

3. Doubleclick on "CDPath" and change the value from "X:\aoe1ror\uk\" or "X:\aoe1\uk\" to "X:\" (X is the drive which holds the DVD-ROM of the game).
4. Now you can play the game and expansion (make sure to have the DVD in the drive).

Example: you have the DVD-ROM inserted in drive D:\ --> change the value of "CDPath" to "D:\".

The above was tested on Windows 7 64-bit with both AoE and RoR installed.

Note: the registry key could be at a different location on other versions of Windows. Search in regedit for "CDpath" to find it.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I hope this information is of any help.

May I please ask how to install the 1.0c patch on a non-CD version of AOE1?

With non-CD versions of AOE1 and Windows 7, when you install the latest patch, 1.0c, it says:
"you must insert a game cd to play a single player game".

I think that this is a registry issue where the 1.0c Patch updates the registry to go to the CD. may I please ask if there a fix for this?
