I want to get into playing this game competitively, now I've found GameRanger and more players. The good thing about an older game like AOE/ROR is that the game is already very well mapped out. Basically what I wanted to ask is which competitive game settings in your opinion produce the most "open" metagame? By open I mean one in which the greatest diversity of civs/strats/units etc. are viable and used. Thanks for your input.

KOR settings Korean Settings Reveal Map, Large map size, Path Finding Default, mostly speed 1.5 rather than 2.0, No Tool Rush, No Paint means you cannot build inside his base or destroy walls or even stealing berries near his base.
Pick Civilization Assyrian 1 v 1
Continental Usual Settings, No Reveal, No Rules, Random Civilization 1 v 1, Large map size speed 1.0 or 1.5
Continental I suggest using Hittite if it's a pick for both. Hittite is better than Assy on continental. These are the most play settings in Gameranger however, at zone existed too many settings.

How about Deathmatch? Or is it all very centralized around Choson and Hittite if it's 2v2?

Deathmatch is usually legion wars or random civ. In most cases played on hills, very rare to play on other maps.

The "nsnp" (No siege, no priest) deathmatch is common. Random civ unless it is 1v1.
"Reg" DM is now regarded as Choson and Hittite.
Normal DM is how the game should be played - all units.
People hate boats in DM for some reason.
I think the way to get the most open play is continental or some kid of shallows game. Full tech tree makes all units more useful rather than just building a whole lot of bonused up units.
I really think that if people played a 50 pop limt in DM it would make things very interesting since it balances the game more. Having 200 of archers sitting behind balista towers in nsnp is just a case of who has the most powered up units. Try Egypt vs 200HHA and/or eles and balista tower in nsnp can suck.

I think people hate boats and sea in general because thy are not good at multitasking for 2 different environments...strange because good AoE players must be good at multitasking, but I guess that the nore they avoid it, the better. BTW I love boats and naval warfare.

Moreover, in this game wood MUSTNT be the resource that comes to shortage.

I've never experienced wood shortage. Most (all) of the MP games don't last that long.
