In your opinion, what are the best civs?

Of course, I will not include Shang here for two reasons. 1) Everyone thinks they're the best, and 2) I personally don't see why they're all the rage ( fast yes, but what do they have that others don't have better?.)

I personally like:

1) Rome
2) Macedonia
3) Phonecia
4) Assyrian
5) Egyptian

I could be wrong though...and probably am.

Thanks,

Kurtis

well the civs that you named are all good civs, but let me touch base on the shang thing. The reason they are all the rage is that they are faster than anyone, its no fun to have camels in your village when you are still tool age. They have every bronze age unit and technology, lovely isnt it? In iron they get horse archers and ballistas and scythe chariots and catapults, and quite frankly thats all you need until mid iron when the other guy can amass catapults with engineering. But the shang can reach iron before anyone else, therefore that army is extremely hard to deal with. Now do you see why shang is so bad?

I agree. I don't think Shang is all that great either. ok, so the villagers are cheaper? I prefer the faster Assyrian and Yamato villagers. But then I'm kinda new to AOE.
Egyptian is good if you don't get rushed by Assyrian, Yamato, or Shang.

Everbody keeps saying that Shang is fast but the manual just says the villagers are cheaper. Do they mean fast because they can build more villagers quicker? I can see that but Assyrian and Yamato villagers, once they are built, are quicker through the whole game. PLUS they have important military advantages like fast archers or tough boats and cheaper cavs.

Can someone clear this up for me?

Nice topic Kurtis. I hope it won't turn out into another Shang discussion like so many others threads did (taunt 7). Instead of the best civs, I'll give you my favorite civ top 5.
I personally have seen enough Hittites and Shangs for the rest of my life. Therefore I refuse playing with them anymore (except in random civ games of course). Same goes for chariot archers. I'm so sick and tired of playing with them every game and I like EVERY alternative strategy. (Lazy Dog's post about Macedonia was great!) Therefore you won't see any CA civs in my top 5.

nr.5: Choson (OK, the way to Iron is though, but once you are there...)

nr.4: Carthaginian (love those hoppers and fire galleys!; nice heles and HA's too)

nr.3: Macedonian (great LOS, pierced hoppers and half priced siege)

nr.2: Minoan (was my fav civ in AoE; compies rule!!; full siege in iron)

TATATATATATAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

nr.1: ROMAN (best civ, no doubt)

Rome has so many opportunities. Cheap buildings through all the ages, best towers in tool and bronze, great fully upgraded swordsmen with attack bonus, complete siege workshop, fully upgradable scythes & cents, good priests and navy. Rome is the only civ which has the awesome fully upgraded hcat/scythe/hele combo which eats away EVERYTHING! What do you want more?

Kurtis, shang is all the rage because: Versitailty, and Economy. Yes minoan has better composite bowmen, Whille assyrian has better CA, Yamato has better Cavs, and palmy has a larger economy bonus. However the advantage of shang is that they can Counter and keep countering every bronze unit you use. Also combined with their Villager cost, this means you get more faster and cheaper, modern chinas Motto. If shang only had Hoplites and chariot archers in bronze, no one would care how powerful they are. they would be able to counter that easily. Its their versitailt that causes their dominance. Same with Phoen, who in most cases is eqaul to shang.

now to what my fav civs are
1. Minoan
2. Phoen.
3. choson(man look you've got a pretty potent force there, good towers, priests, archers and infantry)
4. carthaganian(kicking hoppers, and eles)
5. Greek(still my pet civ but they just SUCK now that carthage is around.)

Okay, I tried Shang today, Bronzed in 13 minutes on the first try. I get everyone's point ( BTW, I had walled up too. ; ) ). I still like Rome the best though. One question, what's the best way to get ballista / heles out with them before getting sacked by some bronze rush?

Preferably Kurtis, don't iron boom without a HUGE economy and/or be spread out. and if u try to make iron with less than 40 vils..you'll be two weak in iron anyway. so best advice, don't use rome. Go with someone with HAs or CAs. Or go Scythes, their superior if u iron jump, becaus ethere is no Bronz eage solution to them. Period.

My favorute civs are
1.Romen
2.phony
3.Minoan
4.egyptian
5.Shang

Romen is a very strong civ in 1vs1 u tower up the enemie and they are almost dead.
and then you go bronz and attack with chariots and cavs.
they need to get a very strong bronz time and tget stone throwers very fast.....

Roman ain't so good in my opinion, a good civ, yes, but not the best. Sure they can tower up, but that means moot once they are in iron. And Rome doesn't have much to fight back an AE/HA combo. Hittite can take them out, with those +1 attack HA, cents, and better cats to wipe out any remaining resistance.

here are my best civs (except for shang)

1. Minoan
2. Hittite
3. Choson(ok)
4. Sumerian

note: these civs are NOT in rankings

-- I like minoan because of it's bowmen. And there are a lot of upgrades for it. That makes it really good, and can wipe out your enemy clean off the map.

-- Hittite is pretty good for me because of it's cats: double hit points. And of it's boats

-- Choson is an OK civ for me. Like it because of it's towers: SUPER RANGE!!!

-- Sumerian is cool for me because of it's villager's hit points, and it's cats. Even though hittites cats are better, but i also think that sumerian is one of my good civs.

I'm glad SOMEONE mentioned Hittite!

My ranking for RM games (all assume an equal-skill match):

1. Shang (I HATE them, but they are unstoppable in equal-skill games)
2. Phoenician (if shang wasn't unstoppable, we would all be crying about how Poe is unstoppable
3. Hittite (by FAR the best civ w/o a villager bonus; war galleys rule, +1 AT archers, and of course every super unit PLUS the best cats in the game)
4. Egypt (these scythes rock, the only civ with a shot vs Hittite in iron)
5. Roman (good speed; scythes and heles/cats)
6. Summerian (poor-man's hittite)
7. Minoan (fast on water map; compies rock! siege in iron)
8. Yamato (I still like these guys, but in iron vs Scyths, they STINK ON ICE)
9-13 others i dont play much
14. Persian (dies too bad for me in iron)
15. Greek (hahah, these guys blow w/o good archers)
16. Palmyran (actually, I like this civ, but there is no way you can win in an RM game due to slow tool)

well I like to play all civs, so my favorite civ is Random. My ratings of the civs will be tiered because some are just plain equal IMO. This is assuming you are playing some vanilla water type map, continental, coastal, mediternaean or narrows, since these are most common. Its also assuming ROR, not AOE.

Tier 1- Shang, Phoenician... yes I think phoenician are almost as good as shang in ROR.

Tier 2 - Minoan, Hittite, Sumerian, Egyptian.
I hate putting minoan in the 2nd tier but the ships are just too powerful If you don't agree with sumerian being tier 2, you've never seen an expert TC boom, did a 70 villager + 30 boat iron in 28 minutes with them with a 14 minute bronze and built an army with them the other day fooling around against the computer. Had all super upgrades by 40 minutes.

Tier 3 - Rome, Assy, Yamato These civs all kinda suck, but they have an economic advantage early and that will win games. Rome is more like 2.5, they are good in iron at least, assy blows in iron now, and yamato always sucked in iron IMO.

Tier 4 - Babylon, Choson, Mace - these civs are just average all around, though if you can get legions and still control some gold Choson kicks butt.

Tier 5 - Greek, Persia, Carthage, Palmyran - if you win with these civs vs someone good feel good about yourself.

I'd have to arrange em like this:

Tier 1: Shang
Tier 2: Phoencian
Tier 3: Minoan, Hittite, Egyptian
Tier 4: Roman, Assyrian, Summerian
Tier 5: Yamato, Babylonian, Mace, Persian, Palmyran
Tier 6: Greek, Carthage, Choson

I know I'm going to get ribbed for this especially by Eljah. My current favorite civ is minoan. I will play w/ them against any civ except shang and multiple Hittite enemies.

I decided to try them out, and they are tough. I would take minoan over phony any day.

I love hittite, but wanted to play something different.

How can you have a favorite civ? There are so many civs and so many good ones... My "favorite" civs only last for about a week or two..

So basically i like infantry civs... Back in AoE i remember playing Assyrion, Yamato, Choson, and Greek (yes Greek!! i did soo good with them ).

When i first got RoR i playerd mostly Roman did awesome tower/broad swordsmen floods. Would always kill someone in bronze, but usually get killed by other 2 double teaming me

Then i switched to Mace... This guys ruled won almost every game, 7-0 in rated I think i am gonna go back to them.

Now i am to chariot archer civs. Do good with Egypt but lose all the games, have no idea why. Sumy and Hittite are very nice, especially if you get 1000+ of wood and gold.

Shang... i only play them when i have too.. don't like anything about them, only the speed.

Phoe... i stopped playing these guys when i lost many games to cats and hele's. Having no cats really hurts sometimes, i loved how they have all infantry. But now Romans are a lot better at that .

Minoan... everytime i play these in rated either my ally or I drop. why? i don't know.

Palmy.. these guys are cool once you are bronze. Just played a game today the guy bronze in 12-13 min with 16 villagers, and the other palmy (random civ game) bronze in 14-15 mins and had a camel in my town.. sheesh.. luckily it wasn't upgraded and i could bone him .. If you know how to use Palmy they can really be good.

Choson... i hated playing against them in AoE, i couldn't handle their legions or towers. Very difficult, can't recall a game were i beat choson in AoE. I switched to Choson in AoE.. did very good

Persian.. LoL.. very fun! there super speed ele's rule. But there economy doesn't

Carth... i like them on water maps, they have a very good navy in iron. Those Fire gallyes burn down docks pretty fast
Good DM civ too.

Babylonian... These guys are good, but i don't like them.. There variety of units in bronze tends to confuse me, and the tower bonus makes me build towers all over the place.

who am i missing?

ummmmmm.......damn...ok, favorite civs or whatever, it all depends but

sumi is allways good
Egy most of the times
Minoans with water(most of the maps people play have water)
Mace is great in bronze
Rome is ok
Hittite good in DM and late iron
Greek on high res, nice if there is water
(those are the only civs that I play)
shang is ok, but I only play em when opponent plays em or 1v1,

I think Greek now really sucks, because of these points:

Not a really fast civ.

Speed is the good thing about it, i think you need speed to just run away when you are beaten up ;(

A lot of other civs have good quality of stuff, like shang villager's food only cost 35, Hittite's boats are good, sumerian's villager hit points, choson's towers and long swordsman hit points, and many more.

Greek's only bonus stuff is only speed, which i think is not really useful.

Do you think so?

These are my favourite civs in ranking,

1. Shang
2. Minoan, Sumerian, Hittite
3 probably Roman

And i will need more time to think about the others

My favourite civs are:

1) Greek
2) Persia
3) Carthage

These civs completely suck. They have basically nothing going for them, which is why they are such a joy to play. Imagine kicking some Shang butt with Greek - I mean, you will feel good for a week after that. I still have fond memories of every single game I've played as Greek and won. On the other hand, if you win with Shang, you only do what is expected. Winning a game with Shang is work, not pleasure.

My 2 cents

Right Spam, damn right!!! That's also why I don't play Shang or Hittite. I remember an AWESOME game I played a little while ago with Mace when I didn't knew how to play them. I only built hoppers and stoners and no compies . My enemy came onto me with loads of Babylonian CA's. Well, my hoppers ripped them apart, wave after wave like it was nothing! I wish I could have seen the look on his face back then. [moment of silence and a happy feeling inside...]

[back to reality] But I eventually lost that game thanks to the other Assy who got into Iron age and passed my army with fast HA's and killed my economy. Even though I lost that game it still felt very good.

I personally don't think that everyone thinks shang is the best civ! The only reason I like shang is because you can tool blitz, that's it! Shang has the worst Iron also. I only play shang for the rated rooms, and only to blitz.

EGYPT RULES!!!!

Are you sure about your comment hydranes? Shang is only good at tool bitzing? (I do agree they are boring) But they are a pain in any age. Period, since they generally make it to every age faster than any one else. Iron age units waxing your bronze sucks.
