in the series?
Age of Empires
Age of Empires: Rise of Rome
Age of empires II: The Age of Kings
Age of Empires II: The Conquerors
etc

also, does anyone still play the multiplayer maps that came with More Empires? like Alligator Alley, that map with two land sides and water between, with more land in the middle. I think I'll get a PC soon enough, so I wanna know how good the scene is.

Nobody plays custom maps. It's either RM or DM

Best music is definitely Age of Empires (not expansion)

I think the aok opening theme is the most epic game soundtrack I've ever heard, better than the similar one in aoe and much better than the one from aoe3. I also like the aoeo version

Both AoE and RoR are the best. AoK is decent too, but TC is trash. AoM and AoE3 are unmemorable.

Yeah, aok opening theme song is way better than the others. But the overall music is so much better in aoe1

What Basse said.

The music that came with aoe was similar to the style re-creationists use to mimic ancient Greek, Roman music. It is different and memorable.

The MIDIs from AoE.

However I don't get why you don't like AoE III's music, it is quite complex considering all the choirs and the great quantity of instruments used (after all it must reflect the historical period of the greatest music composers of all time). Ruinion is quite epic, the lyrics have some stupid meaning but still from a merely phonetic point of view it is quite awesome, IMO.

Both AoM and AoE III have 'mood' expressing music: that is when you attack the music changes and to be honest I like that.

But that has more to do with advancing game engines that can detect the situation you're in then with the quality of the music itself. I haven't played much of aoe3, so my opinion of the music is mainly based on comparing the famous aoe theme.

AOE has the best music to relax however, I play mostly ROR; AOE I played it when I was a kid Single Player mostly AOE trial. ROR has decent music.

The funny thing when you battle experts you forget that you are playing music and you forget about the music it is sometimes true.

I don't like the cheesy RoR music, Aoe's music will always be the most memorable

RoR is ok but I prefer AoE tracks (maybe because they remind me of the SP campaigns I started off playing, as Egypt and whatnot). Sometimes when playing RoR MP I wish I could change the tracks.

AoK is very good too, and I agree that TC tracks suck.

Btw, has anyone realised that the uber famous AoK opening track actually came from AoE? Check out the AoE opening cinematics, it's right at the beginning there! There's also a bit of it at the end of the RoR cinematics.

And on a Babylonian cinematic too.

yes it was there, I have no idea why it became the official AoE series theme tho, as in AoE it wasn't that relevant.

In my opinion other tracks from AoE were more memorable than that one. But maybe it's just me.

It's very catchy though, perfect for a main theme. The main themes for AoE and RoR aren't very good IMO.

AoE3 is an adaptation of the AoK track, its good but not as good as the original, however is a bit more varied. Would say they are both good.

I would also say alot of the music in AoM, particularly that which was used in the cinematics is very good, I am listing them and hoping to make an extended version of each, but that could class as distributing game music so I gotta look into the copyright before I do anything, or I could just do a private version for my own use :|

Anyway, outside the Age of Series, the game with the best music is Heavy Rain, that game builds so much suspence with the music alone its unbelievable...

I don't know heavy rain, but heroes of might and magic 3 and battlefield 1942 have great soundtracks in my opinion. And CoD MW2 (music by Hans Zimmer)

AoE3 is an adaptation of the AoK track
You mean AoE3's intro track? actually, as it was mentioned above, that music first appeared in AoE's intro (you can hear it as the cavalry and the catapults appear), also in the in-game music track and in the voices of Babylon epilogue 'movie'. In fact it is featured more times in AoE than in any other game afterwards. So even though it did gain most of its popularity from AoK on, it is fair to consider it the official track for the Age of Empires Series.

I actually prefer ROR music to AOE. But vanilla AOEIII's title track kicks major butt. I'm not so fond of the intro tracks in the two expansions. AOM's intro is also really sweet. AOK? Not so much.

The drums in AOE3 are what put me off. The actual music was good but just those drums made it sound off.
