Whenever I play Gameranger, the game crashes when I start. I don't know how to get it on (Alright, I'm not much of a tech master, closer to a tech caveman): please help?

Have you made sure that the game is allowed in your firewall "exceptions"?
The easiest way to do this is to run the game as an account with admin rights and "create" a multiplayer game, then tab-alt and click on the "allow" button in the window telling you that "some features of this program are blocked".
You could also go to the firewall settings and just make a new exception for the EMPIRESX.exe and maybe GR as well although I think GR does it on install for you?...
I assume you can open a room and other people join, then when you press "start" in the GR room it crashes?...
If you can get to the actual RoR room and it crashes when you press the "start game" button inside the actual game, it might be that you had italics names (player names are slanted in the GR room).
If you post some PC specs here that you can it might be useful to those who know a bit more about PC's than me... XD

Also check out how theplayers names are written: if you see the other players names in italics, you won't be able to play them for compatibility reasons.

really? I thought the name in italics meant that it was incompatibility of versions...at least i was told so.

italic means you can't connect with other people that is italic simple, also if you are downloading something it will lag so you will also get italic. You get italic if you install a program like GR for example Hamachi, or Tunngle.
Sometimes reinstalling GR to fix italic problem also restart pc if problem persist.
Dom's situation might be your ISP Internet Service Provider has blocking ports to gaming but even though GR lets you play with blocking ports, do you have windows service pack 3 install? Sp1 it is not recommended probably the worst of all XP versions.
Corrupted OS may be the last case if you install something that messed the pc but before formatting an expert or someone who knows to reinstall so you do not lose your data.
