Hiya. I looked around and didn't see the question addressed anywhere. Is there any way at all to get opponents to change diplomatic stance with you to friendly or neutral? Aside from the obvious presets of certain scenarios of course. Thanks and sorry if I missed this from a previous post, and thanks for have'n me here.

Welcome. It's not possible in a random map game against computer players. And yet, for reasons that I don't understand, a computer player may turn ally with you.

In a normal game you have two options:
1 make teams, in which case all diplomacy will be gone, except that allies may declare war on being attacked by you.
2 No teams. In the per file there's something that regulates how soon the computer player will like you after you give tribute. In theory, if you pay enough tribute and switch to ally the computer might do the same.

In scenario's you can create some diplomacy options. For better diplomacy it is therefore better to make an own scenario with edited pers.

it depends on personality
in a standard single player rm with 4 players, usually 1 computer is going to be nicer. the others will immediately declare you as enemy at the start of the game.
if you build in the comps town, or have too many troops there (have a presence in the comps place), they'll change diplomacy to enemy after a while.
Making scenarios is rather difficulty with multiple teams because of the difficulty getting comps to say on one team, not switch around.. at least for me.

I believe that half of the computers on any RM will change diplomacy to enemy with the player, while the rest (which is 3 on an 8 player FFA) Will be potential allies to the player.

I have always wondered how to fix an alliance with a neutral computer player. So you can actually do it by tributing enough resources to the computer?

Hello RicoDaMofo,

Tribute and Diplomacy for AOE/ROR was an interest of mine in the past [when I had time for AOE]. It don't think its intricacies have been completely apprehended and described; probably a reason is because it can be unpredictable.

There have been some good posts on this topic in the past; some are hard to find because the threads don't contain the keywords 'Tribute' or 'Diplomacy'. Here are a couple of links to some past threads devoted to this topic:

In the past, I did a lot of Tribute and Diplomacy testing for scenarios made by the scenario editor. I compiled my results in a PDF file: Click Here for the link to PERTribute.pdf
I believe the required 2600 amount in resources may vary [unpredictably] for Situation VI: Silent Alliance. Keep in mind that this documentation is for scenarios made in the scenario editor.

Tribute and Diplomacy seems to behave differently for Random Maps. Set up a Random Map game with four players, and do not set teams. When you start the game, two players will automatically set their diplomacy on Enemy towards the Human. One player will remain Neutral towards the Human. When you get a Market and you tribute sufficient resources to the Neutral player, the Neutral player will set its diplomacy on Ally towards the Human player. The amount of resources seems to vary. Difficulty level is clearly a factor in the amount required [e.g., lower difficulty levels require fewer resources for an alliance]; I am not sure of the other factors determining the required amount of resources to establish an alliance, but one may be the amount of time that passes since the start of the game. Note that if too much time passes since the start of the game, the Neutral player will set his diplomacy on Enemy towards the human. Now, let's say that you have given enough resources to the Neutral player, and he has allied with you. Two types of alliances may occur here: The Silent Alliance and Allegiance Declared Alliance. The Silent Alliance is when the Neutral player does not say anything, but you get a message indicating the Neutral player is now allied with you. The Allegiance Declared Alliance is when the Neutral player says 'Your empire is worthy of my allegiance' and you get a message indicating the Neutral player is now allied with you. Every time I get The Silent Alliance, the allied player becomes an Enemy without any provocation later during the game. Every time I get The Allegiance Declared Alliance, the allied player remains my ally [unless I provoke him by deliberately or accidentally attacking/converting his units]. The question remains, in Random Maps how does one manage to get The Silent Alliance Alliance VS. The Allegiance Declared Alliance? I do not know the answer. I believe difficulty level is a factor. My guess is that it also depends on the amount resources tributed and the amount of time that has passed since the beginning of the game. I think tributing lots of resources is likely to result in The Allegiance Declared Alliance and fewer [but sufficient] resources tributed with a harder difficult setting is likely to result in The Silent Alliance.
