1st, Hi, nice site.

Question 1:

Can AoE be run in windowed mode (this question will make more sense when you see question 2)? I know someone made a patch to run AoE2 in windowed mode, is there something similar or a trick for AoE?

Question 2:

I really like to play Random Map, 7 AI, Small Islands, Huge/Gigantic, Hardest. Usually the random map generates 2 unsettled islands with extra resources. The AI used to (can't remember when) go after these, but now does not. Is there a way to get the AI to do this short of making a scenario?

I think I remember the AI landing on these extra islands on huge maps, so I'm pretty sure this was AI from the original AoE release. I no longer have that disc, and am currently running the AoE Gold Edition re-release. I've tried running the AoE exe rather than the RoR exe, but no dice. I assume my AoE is patched up to whatever the latest release was then the Gold Edition was put out, and the AI is not as good for this map.

Basically, the resources run out, the AI is stuck, and it's all over. Getting to those uninhabited islands is key.

Also, and this was always an issue, but I figure I may as well ask, is there a way to fix the AI (once again short of making a scenario where I would know exactly where everything is) near the end-game? It seems after a while, the AI just sort of gives up. For example, I start building a Wonder, the AI has plenty of attack forces, but fails to send them.

Anyway, clearly I have a bit too much time on my hands, but thanks in advance.

I guess you should generate a random map and then make a .cty, .ai and .per file for every computer player. You can find utilites in the granary that can modify and make new .cty, .ai and .per files

Read the articles in the siege workshop about per and ai editing. This can hugely improve the stupid AI. You could generate a default map in the scenario editor and give computer more resources, so that they will last longer.

1. Windowed mode: doesn't seem to be possible with legal means.
2. The AI sometimes "gives up" when a game lasts long, say well over an hour. Even if the AI still has plenty of resources (on a land based map), you may sometimes see the farmers stand idle, looking as if they've given up all hope. Maybe they run out of things to do in their AI, maybe you should just make sure you complete a game before that.
