Hi all,

I write here because I have the next problem:

I can play AOE&ROR fine but when I click to f4 (points) or diplomacy menu or chat menu the game crashes to destkop.

I have the next PC:

AMD 2x64 DUAL CORE 4200+
2,5 GB of RAM
ATI EAH 4650 1GB
windows XP SP 2
It also happens in AOK and AOC.

before that, I had an ATI x700 512 and the game worked perfectly, the crashes happen after I changed my grapich card.

Indeed it sucks, i hope someone comes up with a solution. It would be so sad if we are unable to play AoE in the future because of hardware is too advanced for it.

I use Vista, but I don't have any of these problems. If there was a way to run it in a window, that should fix the problem, but AoE doesn't have any built-in windowed mode option. The second link has a link to a fix for AoC.

I found two programs called DxWnd and D3DWindower that should do it. DxWnd always had messed up colors and no cursor, but D3DWindower worked. You'll have to put in your resolution under Common and check Cursor Clip under the DirectInput tab. Try messing around with the Window Mode settings until it works. The colors work good, and the mouse pointer is in the right spot. The only problem is that it scrolls up and left without touching the edge and it won't scroll down or right with the mouse at all. I'm not sure if this will fix your problem since my graphics still works anyway, but you can try it.

I think the main problem isn't the windows version but the video card...but even so you may try...things can't get worse i think :/

Yeah, it probably is a graphics card problem (or a DirectX problem). I think the problem is because new graphics cards don't support DirectDraw. Right click the AoE/RoR CD icon and click on "DirectX Diagnostic" (Vista's DXDiag removed the tests). Then click on the "Display 1" tab and click "Test" next to "DirectDraw." It should do a few display tests (rectangles, bouncing box). If there's any error messages, that means you have a DirectDraw problem. First try disabling acceleration. If that doesn't help, you might need to use a window mode program.
I got D3DWindower from this site. It can make any full-screen Windows program run in a window.

If you want to try it, here's what I did to get it to work.
1. Extract the files and launch Direct3D Windower.
2. Click the + sign, and browse to the AoE or RoR exe file (usually in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires).
3. Select the game's name and click on the second-last folder icon (called "Settings...").
4. In the "Command Line" box, enter NoStartup (recommended) or whatever you normally use.
5. Under Common, enter Height=800, Width=600, or whatever your resolution is, leave "Use Windowed Mode" checked.
6. Check the "Browse..." button next to DLL. The DLL is called D3dHook.dll and is in the same folder as D3DWindower.
7. Under the Window Mode tab, make sure that (at least) DirectX1-7 and GDI are checked on the top.
8. Also on Window Mode, make sure that DDraw Color Emulate, DDraw Color Conversion, and DDraw Primary Blit are checked.
9. Foreground Control has something to do with keeping the AoE window on top/in focus.
10. Under DirectInput, check Use Direct Input, Cursor Clip, SetCursorPos, and GetCursorPos.
11. To start the game, double click the game's name on the list or select it and click the "computer" button.

If there's still problems, try checking or unchecking certain boxes on the Window Mode tab. I think "DDraw Emulate" should probably fix it if it emulates DirectDraw.

You can't move your mouse outside of the window. You have to Alt-Tab.
The window doesn't fill your screen. To fix that, play at a higher resolution or make your screen resolution smaller.
It has that scrolling problem with the mouse where it scrolls without actually touching the edge.

I hope this fixes the problem.
