I just discovered Age of Empires 1 and even though it is 13 years old I have been enjoying playing it. However, I am having a lot of trouble trying to beat the AI in a 1v1 random map match on Hardest difficulty. Hardest is waaay harder than Hard and I think the AI starts with extra food. Usually it reaches the Tool Age in less than 5 minutes and Bronze Age in less than 10 minutes. My regular strategy of reaching the Bronze Age as quickly as possible and attacking was pretty unstoppable against the AI on Hard but is worthless on Hardest because the AI already has a massive defensive army of Bronze Age units sitting in his base by the time I get to the Bronze Age.

What strategies can I use to defeat the computer on Hardest?

Another trick to play hardest on 1 vs 7 is team match.
Make 4 groups ,1st of yourself , 2 group of 2 players and 1 group of 3 players. I always win on this trick

Then it wont reallt be 1v7 because the other teams will attack eachother

They attack each others true but human player has 7 opponents

Only the human player experiences 1v7, if you go to the other "computer" teams, it will be 2v6, 3v5 and so on. A "complete" 1v7 is to make computers in same team so they have 7v1

So? It is still possible

If you just lay low till you have a good army of stonethrowers and cavalry, you can beat almost any computer player without any huge losses. Because the computer usually give up after they have ironed, or in some cases have built a wonder

I have for the first time in my life made a "only villagers" stradegy with towers and the legendary "weeled siege jihad'ers" who are extremely powerfull and i have just paused the game to search for a place to post my results of "only vills"

it is that the vill kick as* and are almost unstubbable just make ALOT of towers and reasrch sll the releated upgrades + make atleast 5 TC and mass villies

did you know that 4 of the maxed vills can kill a longswordsman? that tells about theyr power

and c4master or something..... you dont have to wall IN you should tower UP( mass towers ) and kill the priests with vills xD

Villagers can be a pain in the ass sometimes. Especially palmyrans. But in multiplayer games villagers are best in DM to take out towers. In rm they are needed for resource gathering so you don't really have time to rush opponent with villagers. Maybe in late iron, but not earlier.

About towers, if you are baby, roman or cho you should tower, but also wall. Walls is the key to win on hardest. If you don't wall, you will probably get toolrushed and later on rushed by cav, hoppers, priests and sts.

1 v 7 on hardest? I would say both triple wall(!) and try to establish several footholds on the map. Sneaking a handful of CAs out into an enemies gold mine always buys you time. If you can survive the first 20-30 mins you should be able to win it.

The biggest challenge is when priests back up stone throwers/chariots.

Yeah, 1v7 needs more than 1 base. ST + priests can easily be killed with mace cavs, but who plays mace in a 1v7 on hardest?

After 30 minutes, the computer will give up. Will just stand there and have eco going on, but as soon as you attack, they will come alive and try to wipe you out once and for all

i just made 5 towers ASAP and then they attacked me xD

then make them 7 and crab land by making towerwalls and make sure you have the most of the srone mines cus you need them. and slowly aswance with a group of like 8 vills

then you should have sorounded their town and remember also to cus off their gold supply. and then make 5 TC and mass vills remember food supply and mass towers no micro man. just take a bunch cus you are gonna be on pressure and when they run out of gold ( witsh i vitnessed )
they cant make neither priests nor swords and then you just use your siege vills as builders, siegeengines and warriors.

End of story.

1 vs 7?? well basse's right if you can hold your position for some time the AI players crumble after 30 minutes but the first 30 minutes would be hellish!!
