Hi I'm new to this forum but I've been playing aoe for a couple of years now (single player only) and I just wanna know how I can do a little moding.
I looked in the downloads area and downloaded a couple of mods, but I have my own idea about how to balance the game. for example I want to give persians the wheel as well as other market techs, and I want to change the civ bonuses across the board, and maybe make cavalry cheaper, historically cavalry replaced chariots because they were more effective and cheaper.

The Aoed and Rord is a program that changes pretty much all that you said, just follow the manual and change what you want to create your very own .dat file. Remember to backup the original .dat file, if you lose it you have to reinstall the game to regain it.

Well, if you try to do it step by step a few times you'll learn it. Otherwise you could Hex edit but that only changes a certain scenario and I don't know if that could fix everything you want and it's alot more complicated

Basse, you can't change unit attributes by hex editing a scenario. (unless you activate triple hp mode or something) You could hex edit the .dat file but that would just be more complicated.

Even editing with RoRD to enable techs to a civilization can be hard enough, but just play around a bit and eventually you'll get the hang of it.

Could someone maybe walk me through or show me how to make one change? I'd like to make ballistas available in bronze age, and I can't figure out which line(s) to edit.

Now you're into deep stuff. I think you'll have to edit the techage.txt file.

The first thing you will have to do is find the techage string you will have to edit. To do this you open Technology.txt and find the bronze age technology, the technology file will contain the name, cost and time to research a technology, and also a "techage" string, which links it to the techage.txt file, that contains the actual effects of the research. Now look up the number from the techage string in the techage.txt

No there's the actual tricky part, I can't really remember this myself, only hardcore editing people like Rasteve or Trisolo will give you a detailed description of the numbers used in the techage.txt, what little I once knew of it I learned from this file: http://forums.heavengames.com/redir/http://gesneo.hp.infoseek.co.jp/help.exe
It is for AoK, but most of the strings are the same, maybe it can help you.

Carthage was a glorious civilization devoted to trade, if someone reached the Americas before the christian epoch carthaginians are the most likely candidate.
