I copied my last topic here. hoping someone will see this and can help. thanks
I just picked up a new laptop and decided to install my AOE collections on it, Its running windows 7 and I noticed in other posts that 7 does not like to run older games.

But everything has been running smooth; I have not installed any patches, nor any custom content or maps.

Now when I try to play a single player campaign saved game, AOE crashes to the desktop and I get a message to close the game or connect to the internet to find out what the error is, I have tried to connect a few times to find the problem but alas no such luck.

I have noticed EME2940820 has a similar problem with random maps, and have tried a few of the solutions provided, but I still can't play that one saved game.

Any help would be appreciated... again.

Hello HOGGIE27,

AOE Collector's Edition has AOE 1.0c/ROR 1.0a exe files. These are the latest patched versions of the AOE and ROR exe files. There is a general consensus among the AOE Community here that in this version of AOE [or ROR], the Save Game feature often fails altogether. You can find quite a bit of discussion about this on the forum. The fix that is recommended is to downgrade to an earlier version.

Phatfish recently has developed a program designed to downgrade from this later version to AOE 1.0b/ROR 1.0. You may download it here as Patch 1.0b:

I attempted to use Phatfish's utility to fix my Random Map crashes, but it did not seem to work. I have since manually copied AOE 1.0a and ROR 1.0 from the old disks I have had for 9 years. No crashes yet.

I gave patch 1.0b a go and it caused the same problem I had a while ago on my PC, it would not recoginze the disc was in the drive. so I had to uninstall the patch.

Now it wont load any of my save files for either AOE or ROR

Hello again HOGGIE27,

EMPIRESX.EXE Version is the patched .exe [1.0a] for Rise of Rome.

Apparently, Phatfish's downgrade utility did not work for you also [meaning it failed to downgrade your .exe files to the earlier versions].

I believe if you were running EMPIRESX.EXE Version [the unpatched .exe (1.0) for Rise of Rome], the problem would cease.

If you would like, you may e-mail me to discuss this matter further:

Phatfish should be informed about this so he can fix his patch.

This may not help, but the error code that was produced there is an access violation, which can mean a lot of things, but as far as I know the most likely thing is Windows isn't letting AOE access protected memory or some such nonsense. Other causes for this error can be a null pointer, array index out of bounds, or an out of date pointer reference etc, although I doubt it's any of those as they would tend to me more random and not OS related. I'm no Windows 7 expert, but I know in previous versions of Windows there is something called Data Execution Protection that will stop programs from reading and writing certain parts of your memory, and that may have changed in Windows 7, so if you can find out how to turn off DEP, try it. The only other things I can think of are to enable some compatibility settings under your empiresx.exe's properties tab, only those usually don't help too much.

Hope this helps.

@ EME2940820

Thought as much when I got a Delivery Status Notification (Failure) message back from hotmail, I re sent the email, but just in case that doesnt go through, I should point out that I had no idea you couldnt ask that question, and I thought it may have been another of Phatfish's utility's. not that the last utility was very helpful.

Took your advice and had a look around for the DEP, Found it in advanced system settings, but I dont know much about windows 7 either so I dont know which option to choose either turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only OR turn on DEP for all progrrams and servoces except those I select. Now I thought the second option would be best so I tried to add AOE but I cant find the .EXE file in the add/drop down menu. anybody know what file I should be looking for?
