After too many games crashing while playing with the patch installed (MS patch, not RasPatch), I went to uninstall the patch. The reademe for the patch said to delete the .exe and language files, then reinstall. I deleted them and tried, but it said that I had to close the game to uninstall. I replaced the files and it still said that. I logged out all users and logged back in, yet it still gave the message. Any help?

Before I post:
I guess I could replace the language and exe files from the CD, but I still need this issue resolved if I have to reinstall later in order to fix a bug (a frequent occurance, as many of you know).

I've never had this problem before, but I have had times when my computer only partially uninstalled a game while leaving certain files intact (When I reinstalled AoE once, all my scenarios and saved games were still there). Maybe removing all of the game would help?

Also, maybe the game was still on somehow? Did you try quitting through Task Manager?

Sorry I can't help more, but I only have rudimentary knowledge of fixing computer stuff. Good luck reinstalling.

Actually, AoE leaves saves and scenarios on purpose unless you specify otherwise, so that you don't accidentally lose them during a routine reinstall.

I gave task manager a quick glance, but didn't look close. Logging off all users and logging back in should've done it anyway. I haven't restarted the computer yet, so that might fix it, but I'll try that a little later.

Have you tried Windows Installer Cleanup? You can download it for free from Microsoft. I have used it successfully to fix issues with Java installation.

I seem to remember your dad is a computer fixer? Ask for help? (Advantage of physically being there, better than online advice)

Edit: Wait I forgot the important question - What is your operating system?

Are you by chance trying to run the UNINSTALL.EXE from the game directory? I've never gotten it to work myself either, always complaining about the same thing as it does for you. Uninstalling it from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Software should work fine.

I've been trying the uninstall from the game CD.

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Add/Remove Software gave the same message.

Yes, my dad fixes computers, which is why he doesn't want to do it after work unless it's of vital importance to the functionality of our computer.

Remember, a good restart may resolve the issue. Now that the computer has been off all night, it may work now. *crosses fingers*

I'm hoping it works out. All this goes a bit over my head, since I haven't had many troubles with AoE.

Unfortunately, after several days, it is still giving the message. I'm afraid that I've managed to mess up the registry this time. I certainly hope I don't have to reinstall before we wipe everything and get Windows 7. (Which I hope can run AoE)

Chances are, Windows 7 won't run anything pre-xp. Trying to run AoE on Vista is trouble enough. You'll probably need to either have to buy xp software and have two running systems or get an emulator. As for uninstalling, once you have screwed with the program registry from experience, Gumble knows your in trouble.

Theory solution: Install Age of Empires onto another computer or an external drive, then try uninstalling your AoE using the uninstaller from the other one.
+ You could also simply replace all the files with the installed ones.

Also: Run a search for anything related to Esemble Studios or Age of Empires and manualy delete everything.

As of yet Gumble's editon of Command and Conquer Generals is still completely stuffed...

Too many people say far too much about Gumble. They also claim Gumble says far too much which isnt true.

Thanks, Zappy, I'll have to check that out.

I remember reading somewhere that Win 7 has a fairly functional compatibility mode for older programs, so I'm not as worried about that as I was about Vista, which we luckily never got over here.

I have seen this before, and I believe I deleted the game folder and installed (installation should fix any registry problems). Note I did not reinstall or uninstall, simply new install in same path.

Are you using the AoE gold edition? I believe the uninstall.exe is buggy.

The cleanup program can't find AoE. I seems that I have a ghost program that can't be uninstalled.

Have tried and exhausted all known solutions including all of everyone's suggestions in this thread?
If so and still nothing works, please post screenshots of everything you're trying and all the errors that appear.
Or you could ask your dad.

Okay, I've got it working now. The suggestion to delete the folder worked. I copied everything to another folder and destroyed the originals, and I shall copy things back as I need them.
I need this issue resolved if I have to reinstall later in order to fix a bug (a frequent occurance, as many of you know).
I resorted to said measure because I needed to reinstall due to the error where it says that my graphics driver won't work with it and I have to make sure it's compatible with Direct Draw.

Thanks everyone for your help and input on this issue, and I'm happy to say that it is now fixed and working perfectly.

kudos to Rasteve. Gumble has a similar problem with Command and Conquer generals. But because Gumble's computer is hooked to a university network and somehow the command and conquer corrupted files have wound up in the Uni folder they are completely and utterly untouchable and prevent the game from saving correctly. (if Gumble could get the game working).

Too many people say far too much about Gumble. They also claim Gumble says far too much which isnt true.

Actually, I have seen the "direct draw" error before. I can't remember what I did to fix this (I may have just reinstalled), but I believe several types of anti-virus software pick up the "closedpw" file in the "data" or "data2" folder as a virus (trojan I think). Maybe this file was deleted by the anti-virus, which caused the direct draw error message?

Nope, you're wrong about those files. I renamed and even deleted them and the game still operated perfectly as far as I could see (all I did was open RoR and load a scenario in the editor, so it may still crash if I try to play a game).

I remember having that error years ago. I can't remember the cause though. However I do think I wrote something about it that would be buried in the forums somewhere.
