I usually frequent Stronghold heaven, but problems with development of my Age of Empires map prompted me to come over here. Therefore I decided that I might as well upload the map here. So, I present to you my new Rise of Rome scenario:

The Seas Shall Provide

Scenario minimap:

Objective: Acquire 12,500 gold. Conquest does not cause victory.

It's a race to 12,500 gold via trade, fishing, and naval power in an archipelago full of budding trade-states!

This map was inspired by of all things one of the Egyptian campaign levels. More specifically I believe it was "A Wonder of the World." I liked how the sea was full of trade ships belonging to different players and plying different routes, so I took that concept, turned it Greek-ish, and then ran with it a long ways. I also put in some wildcard players. How they affect the game can vary wildly = ). While this scenario is intended for multiplayer I have tried my best to create capable AIs for the map, and they seem to work; despite my best efforts my own AI beat me. There were just too many ships from 3 different players <_> . The only exception would be the wildcard players, who, given their positions, are not computer playable.

As I mentioned before I usually hang around Stronghold Heaven. I'm not so sure how things work over here, but it is customary for designers to showcase their maps in the map room prior to release. Hopefully that is acceptable here too.

I have yet to play this with humans...Anyone want to play? If so you'll have to let me know how to do that exactly. Or, just test it amongst yourselves and let me know how the game goes = ) .

Scenario has been submitted. Watch for it on the download page.

Now this looks interesting. good job taking the time to post here, your more likely to get more downloads and therefore more fans depending on the success of the scernario. However even though conquest won't work, defeating your oppenents abillity to build trade ships IE destroying all their houses would probably turn this map in your favour. Also having land trade routes with raider nations would also be interesting. You can make a 'trade route' by having goldmines in the wilderness and banning storage pits and town centers. This way only villagers will be able to make the travel to the mine and then return all the way back to their city being quite vulnerable to 'raids'.

Gumble will be using this idea in his campaign but he would love to see human players use this strategey.

a 'silk road' of sorts.

Anyway good job Timballisto

Too many people say far too much about Gumble. They also claim Gumble says far too much which isnt true.

This looks very interesting, is the first image the bitmap image? If so good work. A couple of screenshots wouldn't be bad though.

Unfortunately, the bitmap above is not in the game. It's 24-bit so I can't use it. It was originally intended to be used but 256 colors just wasn't working for me (especially for the vegetation).

Yes, you can just eliminate a player's ability to trade, but there's no good way for me to prevent that, and, too be honest I'm not entirely sure I want to. I just don't want somebody to focus entirely on conquest as a way to win. Running a player into the dirt though is fine. That way they'll still need trade boats.

Thanks for the comments.

lol. I just played the scenario and I focused on conquest as player 7. I managed to eliminate the other players on my island but when I started to focus on another player I lost. All of my hard work gone because I forgot what the actual objective was. *sigh.

But while I'm here I thought that I would provide a little feedback.
-Player 7 has no where to build buildings and I found it extremely difficult to expand and even advance in ages. Even when you do clear some forest you can't build buildings as the ground is covered in elevations.
-Player 1 only gathered resources, didn't build buildings or create villagers.
Apart from these 2 things its a reasonably good scenario which has a good layout.

EDIT: ok I played it again as player 5 and I have to say that it was extremely easy. After suppressing players 4, 2, 3 and then 6, I just had to wait it out until I have enough gold from trade. I noticed the same problem with player 1 as before but this time player 7 also did nothing. You probably should also add the actual scenario objective to the scenario.

The objective isn't listed? Hm, I thought I put it in...Sounds like something I might forget =P.

Okay, well I will probably do an update then to fix all the problems listed. I realize that there are certain positions that are not as difficult against computers, but my hope was that human intelligence would balance that. Until I know whether or not that's the case I can't really fix the difficulty too much. I can fix the gray player's hilly area though, and try to fix up the whole blue-does-nothing thing.

Thanks for the feedback. If I release an update will you review it?

edit: Well, the objective is in there under scenario instructions. "The winner is the first to acquire 12,500 gold. May the winds be always at your back...". It's in the second to last sentence. If there are no scenario instructions, I must have released the wrong version...

lol, sorry about that. Must not have seen it.

I tested it again as player 8 and this time I noticed that players 1, 2, 3 and 7 all were stagnant only creating a few villies. I also noticed that I wasn't Yamato as I should have been and that all the other teams were different civs. I believe that this would be due to something inbuilt into the game hence nothing for you to fix or worry about. I will test it as player 1 and see if all the teams behave as they should.

EDIT: I tested it as player 1 and was victorious. Player 4, 5, and 6 were good but the rest...*sigh* For some reason they don't seem to do anything. Maybe try playing around with the associated AI and PER files? but apart from that I can't really help you.

Sea is always underused in MP games, so this is a cool initiative

Yep. It's out. And at the moment I'm fiddling with it some more for a new version based on the feedback.

EDIT: New version has been uploaded.
