Target: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\EMPIRESX.EXE" -midimusic

^That would be the correct syntax.

If that switch does anything, that's how it will be sent to the command line.

If not you could always launch the game and then remove the CD.

well that didnt work neither. i think it doesnt work probably because i had the original aoe cd soundtrack in mp3, i just simply changed their file type (by name) into .mid, which works on media player still the same but when applying them as xopen.mid, xwon.mid, xlost.mid and xmusic1-10.mid music doesnt work...

anyone know how to direct aoe to play specific music files in place of those i named above?

It might work if you make those .mid files .wav instead of .mp3 as Age of Empires is configured to handle .wav files properly but as far as I know doesn't handle mp3 files.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\EMPIRESX.EXE" NoStartup MidiMusic

Actually, the NoStartup is just something I put there to get rid of the intro cutscenes.

Only .mid files can be used.

hold on..they were originally *.mp3 files that i simply changed their name to *.mid

I'm not sure but I believe mp3s and MIDIs are a bit too different to be converted just by switching the file name, you might need some sort of midi converter. (google it. )

FAIL

You could always burn it onto a cd, and switch like someone said.

(MIDI converter = costs money and doesn't work well)

but the thing is just by the change of name it still played and worked the same on the player media player. so unless it doesnt recognize by version or something that it doesnt plays i dunno.

It's your media player that fails then, by recognising the mp3 format even when you gave it the wrong extention.

no its not my media player failing. it plays it exactly the same. i guess ill need to get a *.mp3 to *.mid converter to pull this off.

MIDI and MP3 are fundamentally different formats. MIDI is like digital sheet music, it just stores notes and what kind of instrument/timbre the note is played by. MP3 takes a sound wave (two for stereo) and compresses it using a lossy algorithm, like how JPEG takes a full color image and compresses it.
There are programs that can convert sound files to MIDI, working by trying to figure out what notes are playing and what instruments are playing them. This doesn't work well, especially for speech, singing or very complex music.

IIRC you can take out the AoE CD after you have started a game and insert any music CD. Then AoE plays the music on the CD you put in.

i think i used to disable game music and then replace the cd when loading up. well, actually i never really used my cd as i hoped someone on zone had their cd in...

im note sure on the parameters, but i think in-game you can switch music off via the menu (same menu which lets you change speed, scroll speed thingy etc).

you can also just play music via media player and then load game (remember to disable in game music).
