IMO RoR has far better gameplay than AoE vanilla. I've heard many designer friends here say that AoE is better for scenario designing though.
Reasons why I think that RoR is better gameplay-wise:
Queueing is no doubt more convenient in RoR. It's annoying in AoE to have to rotate between all your buildings everytime you need to make more units. This is especially so in DM and late-RM games, when you'll have something like 50 siege workshops, 100 archery ranges and 80 stables...
RoR has more map types, which makes RM/DM much more interesting and fun. In fact, my favourite medit map can only be found in RoR, not AoE.
More units in RoR. Ok, it may not make that much of a difference, but it's always good to have more variety, I suppose.

Other things in gameplay that make RoR much better are the better path finding and it stopped the idiotic behaviour of villagers: let a villager start building something, send a few others to help, when the first villager has finished building the other villagers will stop dead in their tracks and stand idle.

They made the Assy villagers slower, but I don't know by how much. I thought they didn't change the Yammy speed bonus.

That would be another undocumented change, I suppose, unless my memory is wrong. However, the Assy and Yammy villagers are still faster than the others.

In RoR you can use the Carthaginians and that's enough for me. Well i think that Catapult accuracy is also lower in RoR and that's good.

But camels nor scythe chars have a chance against hoplites.
