Hey guys,

Having some issues trying to run AoE on Windows Vista. I've tried Compatibility modes on XP sp2 and 95 so far but no matter what I try it won't let me start any games -- it says I need to insert the CD ... the one that's sitting in my drive right as I type. I've tried No-CD patches thinking maybe I can just patch it but alas none of the CD patches recognize the version of AoE.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind, it just started working today... I had to pop the CD out and back in a few times before it finally recognized that the CD was in there.

Glad you got your problem sorted. Can anyone help with mine?

Had no problem on my (very) old computer, but no dice when I tried installing AoE Gold on a new Vista system. I get that "cannot initialize graphics system" message which is documented (for AoE II) in Microsoft's site but none of the suggested fixes seem to work. Messed around with command line parameters, skip startup video, force screen resolution, etc. Still the same problem (RoR and AoE II also)

Intel 2160 Dual Core 1.8 GHz
Vista Home Premium 6.0.6000
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 128Mb
1 GB RAM

Any thoughts?

Did you use compatability mode? If not, do.

Yup there's people that still plays AoE (look at this forum). And yeah a lot of people think that the game's outdated, and get surpised when the realize that this game's still played. even though in my good days i played everyday, now the Univ is so demanding that i can't do that anymore but even so i play at least once a week.

Well, after the Gaming Zone died, like 2 years ago, of course we're disappointed that even Ensemble Studios left us out of ESO. In this moment we use IGZ, Gamespy arcade or we use Hamachi (no one of those works for me , anyway)

Koramei how did you stumble across this forum and this thread to then show your shock that people still play AoE? Strange journey you had.

I would like to know if AOE, ROR, AOK play on Vista. Can someone confirm for us? Keeping in mind there is a compatability option.

I was trying to install AoE Gold on my dad's Vista laptop. To my surprise, it worked perfectly. I just don't understand though, why my other old games all can't be installed. Apparently 16-bit games can't be installed on Vista, but I'm pretty sure AoE is just as old as Caesar3, MegamanX4 and Worms2... It's frustrating, I can't install my favourite games on this Vista system.

That's because AoE still brings in money for M$ and those other games don't.

Koramei - we don't appreciate people coming into the forums and telling us a game we like is dead. Just a pointer

AOE is awsome, maybe even better than AOE3. I played AOE for like a month before beating it and getting a LITTLE bord with it, but it took me like a day to beat the AOE3 campain. Plus AOE3 is colonial days, not allot happened then (i mean cannons, people and horses. thats about it).

However if they come out with a World War 2 age of empires I AM TOTALLY BUYING IT!

Seeing as you keep getting flamed I'm going to join in...
it took me like a day to beat the AOE3 campain.
Cheats?

Really?

Anyway, enough flaming...

I haven't gone Vista yet. My brother has Vista and he plays AoE fine. He also has a new Vista service pack which was released this month, which helps with compatability issues.

Age of Empires IV - I have read that Ensemble Studios are looking at two possibilities - a remake of Age of Kings (3D engine) or 20th Century/WWII timespan. I will look for the link but it came directly from Bruce Shelley himself.

YES I KNEW IT HAD TO BE TRUE! The AOE series cannot be complete without a WWII version. subaries, gas guns, tanks, and war guns gallor. And battleships, battleships RULE!

No I didn't do cheats. I don't really do cheats because they're boring for age of empires. The only reason you would do it would be to win, and I only like cool cheats like flying in a firstperson shooter (I like the AOE cheats because you get cool units). There is only one campaign, as appose to AOE which has lots, but it took me more like a week (I was being drammatic). However I must admit modding AOE 3 is much funner than AOE 1.

Many people want a remake of this game, much more than a WWI and II game.

Well, I'd say I want both and I do but that would mean allot more people flooding the forum, and it wouldn't be just us anymore. Don't get me wrong I like getting more people in this forum, but a WHOLE FLOOD of people.

..?

how could making the 4th Age of Empires being a remake of the original lead to flooding? perhaps all the people who played AoE, moved to AoK and now at AoE3 would be annoyed with that though.

i think they should make the 4th one of WWII, it would follow the tradition..

I sure hope they remake either AoE or AoK in AoE4... There've been far too many WW2 games in the market already, IMO. Besides, I think that too much gunnery in AoE would spoil the feel of the game. Let's go back to ancient times!

Btw, AoE should run on any 32-bit version of Windows Vista, because it installed perfectly fine on my dad's laptop. The reason why it can't be installed on some people's Vista systems is probably because they're 64-bit versions...

I doubt they're going to remake any of the games. It's too bad they're sticking with the fancy-3D though.
