Mmm... isn't the forums all about everyone chipping in and contributing with what they know?
The type of civ and strategies to use depends largely on the kind of map and game type (RM or DM) you're playing on. Same as AoK. You can check out the strategy section in the Granary for some good strat articles for you to start off with. You could also do a search on the forum for articles and interesting topics that many people have come up with over the years.
I personally like water maps a lot because it focuses largely on economic might. Smaller land maps are also fun, because they allow for more action, but it's just not my piece of cake.
For water maps, civs with ship or wood bonuses will come in very useful. The Hittites have a very good tech tree and have +1 attack for all archers and +3 range for their ships; Minoans have cheaper boats and ships; Yamato have extra hitpoints for their ships, as well as faster villagers to gather wood; Phoenicians have faster wood gathering rates...
For land maps, the Shang would make a good choice as they have cheaper villies, making them faster than any other civ, especially if you want to execute a rush. Assyrians are another favourite for their faster villagers and faster firing rate for archers. These two civs, however, have a weak tech tree in the Iron age, thus making them bad choices in team games and DM, where games tend to run into the late stages.
Generally, civs with early economic bonuses and better archer units are more popular. Of course, what civ you want to use also depends on what kind of strategy you're pursuing and what units you want to make use of as your main force.

ok I,ll stick my neck out here a little bit for u Black Knight.
First thing you need to do is figure out what strat. u like to play. Do u like more mid game play or do you like to sit back and build till u finish aging? or do u like to get the game started early and be in ur opponents base with clubbers in less than four minutes?
Second u need to figure out the strong points of each civ as well as its week points and from that knowledge you can find the best rushing civ. or best heavy hitter in later ages. Maybe their the same civ, more likly not. You might try Assy. as a fast attack civ and summy as heavy hitting civ in later ages.
Third thing that i found ( this maybe should be the most important item )is you need to find some one to partner with that is willing to come to your aid just as u are willling to come to his if you get double teamed or even trip. teamed. There is hardly anything worse in a 2v2 or 3v3 than a team member that just sits there and dosent lend a helping hand when ur peons are running in mass from the enemy.
Heres a good one , Learn how to run. This may not just save u but it may save the game .
Learning opening moves is crucial. how many peons to food and how many to wood outa the first eleven or so peons that you make. do you make another peon and put him on stone before u tool? is it worth it? When i started playing ror i sat down and took a day and timed how long it took a peon (villi.)to do certain tasks such as cut an arm load of wood or gold it would benifit you to do the same.
what are the first 10 buildings you need and in what order do you build. how long does it take one peon to build certian buildings? its faster with two or three peons but how much resources were not gathered because u used 3 peons instead of one?
Placement of buildings is important as well. Tower your resourses as soon as you can. In stone u cant build walls yet ,use house placement to construct temp. walls at resourses. build a barracks ASAP and place it where it will support your resourses best. A decent player can have four mayb five clubbers in ur base in four minutes or so. All he has to do is disrupt your base a little and mayb kill a peon or two to knock you outa stride and make you question wether you should try to tool or make a defence. Point is you loose time and thats what your enemy needs is just a lil more time so his partner can finish you off.
Right now im starting to play ror again and as soon as i refigure out some of my openings ill be online looking for games.
I could ramble on for another three chapters or so about specific strats but i need ta get to bed.
night, clo
