Did you check the in-game options? Normally the music volume will not be turned down to zero by default, but you might check.
If that's not the issue then you may also need to check your sound card.
And if you copied the CD (as a backup) you may have missed the audio files and then you don't hear the music either.

peter: The music volume is on the highest. How do I check my sound card? No, the cd is not copied. I have the msuic files in the Sound-folder.

Wait a minute. You don't mean the music but the background sounds like miners collecting stone or gold, hunters collecting meat, lumberers chopping wood etc? That seems to be XP related - after some update those sounds just went forever.

peter: No, I mean the music. I can hear the workers chopping wood and all that.

That's weird - I also have the original CD, and I get all the music. Anything changed on your computer since last year?

One possibility is that you installed the game with the CD in the DVD player and that try to play it from your CD burner (or vice versa). Then you won't hear the music either.

peter: I only have one player and it's both CD, DVD and a CD burner.

You might try the troubleshooting forum then. There are a few people there who are good at solving problems.

Hm, I can hear the music when I start the game without the cd but then I can't play. Strange.

That's the midi music, it sits on your hard disk. It's normal behavior.

Yeah and incase you want to hear this music instead, start the game by using "midimusic" parameter. Also have you tried if other games using RedBook Audio play it correctly during gameplay? If not, you might want to check whether that audio cable or whatever it's called is correctly connected into your CD-drive.

You could try the AoK forum - that's for AoE II. I just looked and some people report similar problems as you. It's to do with how you DVD player or CD player is configured - it must be configured as master or you can't hear the music. So the tough question is: have you always had that one CD/DVD player on that system, or have you had two in the past? In that case you might have replaced the slave device by your present player and as a result you don't hear the music. I can see your next question: how to find out how your device is configured. That's something you can't find out in the configuration screen - or I have looked in the wrong place, which is not unlikely - you'll have to open your computer case for that and peer at dip switches, but it's better to look for help in the technical forum.
