The expansion did feature an option to play the original Age of Empires with or without the additional content.

what they mean by additional content? music video extras? sounds like they might mean it is a stand alone program?

Maybe they just mean that the RoR exe doesn't overwrite the AoE exe.

I guess the idea would be you could pick to play without the expansion or not...the question is, why?

You can play the original campaigns in RoR with the additional stuff that the expansion brings. Maybe that's what it means.

It's a weird one, isn't it? It's not so much that the ability to play vanilla AoE is a specific thing that RoR "allows", it just doesn't stop you if you want to.
