Howdy all.

Now I am by no means a newbie, and although I am not where I would like to be as a player, I can certainly hold my own with most units and have a pretty good understanding of if, and when, I should get certain upgrades.

One tech that I have never really tried -- even though I do like using priests from time to time -- is Jihad. If I am playing a Civ that gets this tech, most likely Egypt or Phoenician in my case, what are some examples or circumstances of when I should invest in this technology.

In other words, does anybody use this tech and, if so, when and to what degree of success?

I had it used on me before...

One time i went in a game with experts, *cough* Methos_ST_ ... And well i attacked him, i have actually attacked him and killed some of his peon!! Little did i know that those were his Jihaded peons.. He build a bunch of TC's and just pumped those cheap Shange Jihaded villes... i couldn't stop him... it was crazy!! so crazy ihave to go around telling/bragging to everyone!!

Jihad is very cheap for 120 gold ! It makes your peons nasty.. 65 HP 10 AP and now 2.1 speed vs 1.8(assuming wheel) at a cost of 8 carry capacity. However, this loss isn't grave since you are mining stone/gold very close to SP/TC's and most iron civs have 16 carry on wood, so going to 8 carry means for the typical 40 wood tree you need 5 trips rather than 3.. some time is lost but not much. Hunting really sucks(carry 2) now unless you are quite close to SP/TC. Make sure your farms are with in 2 tiles of TC/granary. There is no loss of farming speed if 1 tile away but at 2 tiles rate drops from .4 to .38 and at 3 tiles it is .32. Most usually you can place a bunch of farms 1 or 2 tiles away anyhow.

Jihad makes a huge difference when using forward peon to support and attack ! Now it takes 2 cat rocks to kill them. I have often killed HA's etc w/them. Jihad is a HUGE help when adding a tower rush to your attack. I get Jihad quickly unless I have a bunch randomly dispersed deer to hunt and I am not in immediate military conflict. Jihad is great for countering small packs of units that attack your peons. .. neilkaz ..

PS Jihad has NO effect upon the basic gathering rates.. just the carry capacity !

Jihad is great I suggest you try it. It turns your most populous unit into a potent offensive force. Unfortunately the AI means they require a lot of micromanaging but it can be worth it. Possibly the best are Shang for price, but I like those that get siegecraft as well. A bunch of Jihad vills is the quickest way to take out enemy towers. It has to be seen to be believed. Assy wheeled , jihad + siegecraft vills are possibly one of the fastest most effective melee units in the game imo. Still don't send them against sc or elephants or anything with a lot of armor. If you are fighting any kind of tower war get Jihad you won't regret it (defensively or offensively). If your enenmy is raiding you sporadically with archer units - get Jihad. If you are winning and fancy a laugh get Jihad (oops did I say that ).

One time I was playing on a 100 pop limit in a 2v1 against some friends of mine (real life friends...they are getting kinda good, and its becoming a little more difficult to 2v1 against them )

anyways point is that I built 70 villagers, afraid to make more, cause I needed military
while I was attacking one guy, the other one trannied over 5 cavalry to my village and they attacked. I realized I was 102/100 and couldnt build units, so I researched jihad. Then with like 15 guys, I took out his cavs slowly. I lost about 12 villagers, but jihad makes em like little mini cavalry...from now on whenever I make tons of villagers and cant guard them, I try to get jihad, it also increases speed and wheeled jihaded vills can catch chariot archers

Also siege craft+Jihad is sueful for taking out annoying walls...Yes even fortifications!use jihad to protect your villies..but then again..DON't. Use soem cheap broad swords this won't hurt your economy as much. Preferably be sting when ya use jihad

My favorite use for jihad is as a cheap way of taking out towers. They are especially useful if you have seigecraft. They do 10 dmg per poke on towers and walls. It's ungodly. They can even take out ballista towers rather well. Of course assuming you have masses of vills.

Jihad is good when playing newbies who attack you with axemen in iron. Their attack makes little effect without it, but has NO effect with Jihad! But then, if the newbie is in tool, and you are iron, wouldn't he be dead before he attacks? Oh well....

If sumarian got jihad, that would be so cool. But for now, Palmy jihaders are the best. Did you know that if you get siegecraft and jihad, your villagers do 10 dammage to walls! Thats better than most units, and I think they kill towers easy too.

I have found jihad to be pretty dang potent against... Hittie Seige weapons! They run up to the cat or heavy cat real quick like, whack it, and it's gone. About ten villies, a couple of stabs, and (chunk!) goodbye.

Then, back to collecting.

The best use of Jihad vills for me is offensive towering - Roamn, Choson, Babs, Shang, Phoen. Perisa should also get jihad so vills can ran. Roman and Choson are best imho - rush the legions in, then Jihad-vills to tower.

Another occasion is mentioned by others - that is you can not wall and can not protect your vills. Jihad enable them fighting small raid parties or run as Forest Gump.

The 3rd reason is for fun.

Jiahd vills can take down small groups of archers (even EAs), but do not try to fight SC, War eles, or heavy infantry. Good to mess up with cats, and can also try to get small group of ballista/heles if you have nothing else.

From my observation, the jihad vills collecting food from farm next to TC/G slightly quicker than ordinary vills. Wood collection affects over the distance but you can always build pits closer - I do it even without jihad.

There are only a few civs that get Jihad & Seigecraft. Assyrian, Babylonian, Choson, Palmyran, and Roman.

I've used Bab J&S effectively in intermediate level games, and gotten waxed in intermediate games. Some opponents are good, but the unusual behavior of villies attacking and winning throws them. And then others just snicker and pull out the SC or AE.

The towering is the key. Strong towers built by strong villagers. Even better is destroying enemy towers and then building your own on the rubble of the enemy defeat.
