After looking at the other heaven sites, a question has started to burrow in my head...

Some sites throughout the heavens have a campaign or scenairo that manages to blend story, gameplay and map design in such a fantastic way that it creates a whole new realism within the campaign - giving it a different feel...

These campaigns quite simply are the top of their table, and quite frankly, can hardly be called campaigns. A prime example of this is AOK's Ulio by Ingo van Thiel (it has 170+ comments) whose twists and remarkable editor tricks brang the campaign to a whole new level... The story was incredibly rich and was actually quite entertaining to read, and the gameplay was even better! Ulio is quite easily the best of AOK...

But what does AOE have?

Although there have been quite a few excellent contributions, it's very hard to pick one that is on top of everybody else. While part of the reason is because storyline is restricted due to no speech triggers, you would think there would be one campaign in all this time that really stood out and stayed in your head... It's almost been ten years!

Who would you say has created such a campaign within the AOE granary?

Or has it even been created?

Go ahead and state your opinion as you wish.

Well what do you know. I'll put him up.

What campaign is his best would you say?

Its all relative, Ingo was definitely a hugely influential deisgner who made awesome campaigns (which are still awesome), but more recently Andrea has create several masterpieces. Although i'd venture that Andreas campaigns quality is overall better than that of Ingo, it's not necessarily because of a difference in the level of designing prowess each designer has. I, personally, still tihnk there's still some way to go before the perfect AoE campaign, but there are some that have come very close

I think Tai Gun II by Ingo is still the best custom campaign ever made for this game. It captures the true feeling of AoE scn design, and it's truly unique in every way. It was the first custom campaign I played when I first arrived here at AoEH. I really long back to those golden days sometimes.

Well thanks a lot for helping this get off the ground, I'll go ahead and put these for yeh...

Quite frankly I don't think there really has been a campaign that really defined the AOE custom scenairo and truly sat in your head...

I believe that when its out, we'll all know. :-)

Well, I need RoR to play Ingo's masterpieces: Im sure that 'The Two Brothers' was just a mere fraction of the great camapaigns he has made, and so at this point I nominate Andrea Rosa.

The best actual scenario...I loved 'Covert Operations' from 'Memories of the Gupta Dynasty', and 'Yell of the Rebels' from 'Angkor Wat and the Khmer Legacy'. BOth of which are by Andrea Rosa, may I point out.

The Two Brothers was the last campaign by Ingo in his AoE days. It doesn't have all the units and effects that RoR has, but it has everything else. I'm not saying that Andrea Rosa isn't good, but Andrea Rosa had Ingo van Thiel and Imhotep as examples, to mention two of the best. Ingo van Thiel and Imhotep didn't. They had to find everything for themselves, and IMO Andrea follows in Ingo's tracks, scenery and storytelling wise, and those of Imhotep, historically wise. His campaigns are real stunners, to be sure, but he has the disadvantage of coming in late.

The two brothers, from what I remember, was the second campaign I downloaded...

It really is quite something... The eagles, the "oracle stone". Really was something else! I'd say it was one of my favorites...

You are right Peter, it is virtually impossible to pick the best designer after such an ample span of time. Every one learns something from the previous, and after so many years we had time to learn a lot. It would be pretty much like choosing between Fritz Lang and Stanley Kubrik, or comparing 70s Ajax with 90s AC Milan, if you prefer.

As for campaigns, the best one in my opinion is still "The Martial Emperor" by Rich Parker, with the first level made by Imhotep ("The Emperor's Deadly Game") as the best scenario.

I say the best scenario is "When in Rome" by Rich Parker. Its a single scenario in campaign form, which isnt uncommon. I think it combines some of the best scenario designing i've ever seen with the best gameplay i've ever played. Plus, he is awesome at making cities. I think that's the only level that i've ever played more than once. Now thats saying something
