I've played Aoe2 for a looooonngg time, after I shifted to it from regular Aoe. Now I'm used to Aoe2 and I've come back to Aoe 1. So I need to know what were the main differences in the User Interface. I've already noticed that you cant queque units, or reseed farms... but I am still confused an I need your help here.

The graphics are much worse
The cost of EVERYTHING is different
Gold isn't required until the third age (not first like in aoe2)
The game is very unbalanced: Archers and Catapults can beat virtually anything
The last level of tower is uberly overpowered, so if a dm goes for over 20 minutes it can become a stalemate
Basically, you need to learn to only use one type of unit; the right type. Balance goes out the window.

True, there aren't any counterunits like in later RTSs, but there are specific counterunits for different units. Archers don't exactly own everything. If you mass archers in DM you're gonna get killed because once the Hittite HCats roll in, you're finished.
Every unit can be countered if you do it right, IMO. The imbalance, I feel, lies in the fact that the Hittites are so powerful. Other than that, I'm ok with the game.

Ah, i never really thought of the hittites to be all that powerful really. Sure, they have awesomely unmatched bonuses, but that doesnt mean that everybody is going to win with them. I myself prefer Egypt, and im happy to say i've never, to date, been defeat by any hittite
A bad player with Hittite won't defeat a good player with Egypt. So that doesn't mean a lot.

@Fox: Wanna play? I've never been defeated in dm as hittite

Peter, that's beside the point, IMO. If you compare two players of similar standard, the one using Minos is almost certainly going to get whacked by the one playing as Hittite. In other cases, it'll be harder for a slightly more skilled player to beat a lesser guy who's playing as Hittite.

I know that, I was saying that archers don't beat everything. They get crushed pretty easily by massed siege. As for HCats being overpowered, there're two ways to beat them. Outnumber them and crush them, or send in cheap and fast units (like scythes) into them, and let them demolish themselves.
*edit* In this sense, the game is balanced... if you know how to counter every unit, that is. After my exams I'll give you a couple of DM games and break your undefeated streak.

Obvious. Minoa is an RM civilization. Better compare Hittite to another tribe, which is more suited to Death Match games. Like Choson.

Sorry, clarification here, LF... I meant Minos vs Hittite in RM. In DM the imbalance is even worse.

I've got the strangest inkling that might work for anything

OK, I take back the invincible archers comment...still, I don't see how anyone can beat a HHA and HCat player easily. I look forward to you trying

The point is in DM, random civ is stupid...because the difference between the civs are so huge.
Take say Shang vs Carthage.
Shang doesn't get any Iron Age Goverment Center upgrades making its siege weapons useless and so it has to rely solely on its Scythe Chariots...which struggle without Ballista Tower support.
All in all, if the opponent masses Eles+Helepoli+Towers, which given eles and scythe chariots take the same amount of time to build, a similarly experienced Carthage player will easily do, a Shang player is screwed.
