The zone is closing down AoE/RoR/AoK/AoC in June.

That will probably be it for me playing RoR any more.

Lots of players are signing a petition at http://www.saveaoe.com/to try to keep the Zone alive.

I doubt the petition will do anything, but it is probably worth a try.

Ah shucks... is there no other game host available? If the AoE/RoR community is shut down with no alternative being introduced, then we'll lose a lot of players.

IP isn't enough because you can't get to play with players you don't know. Crap, looks like I'm going to lose contact with all the friends/foes I made on the Zone...

Same for AoK I guess then. Shame really, it can't exactly be a massive drain on server resources. I'm number 6055 on the petition.

Although some people hate it it would be nice to get it on Gamespy or something.

I wonder if this also means you won't be able to launch a game from MSN messenger too.

Players will play it on Gamespy and most "zone regulars" already have each other on MSN Messenger contacts. It will just be hard to keep the community alive. Typically there is about 90-100 ppl on the zone playing RoR and always a few more playing AoE. Those numbers will go down dramatically without the zone.

And there are plenty of non-regulars out there too.

Oh yeah, and the RM players would never ever get to see the DM guys anymore. I loved those archer wars, but it looks like I won't get to play them anymore...

Hmm, I just remembered XFire... Think it'll be a good idea to add each other there. Currently, AoE/RoR doesn't support a game lobby. Maybe if all the Zoners back it up, we can get one up and running.

*edit* Those who're interested, you can add me on Xfire. My username there is "xeenslayer".

Not necessarily. We can go through fan sites, other hosts they may play on, and whatever we can lobby for ourselves.

Quoted from Ensemble Studios:

We at Ensemble Studios were recently made aware of this and will be actively looking for possible solutions for this situation over the coming weeks.

Do you believe ES will find a good solution to this problem?

BTW, I tried playing AoE III and AoM on ESO and I didn't like the system at all.

At least the forums are still here .

My biggest complaint about EE/AOM/AOE3 was the multiplayer match-making --- being within the game.

Players playing AoE and RoR started playing back in the glory days of 1996-1997. These players always go away for a bit... then come back to the Zone and play for a while.

What I see is the die hards will try to go to another site --- but the expert community will die out because when old players go to find AoE/RoR on the zone --- they won't find it. This will kill the community.

Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War is probably what most of you would want to consider "the next closest thing to AoE".

AoE will always be remembered. But just like there is a time to die, there's a time for a game to die. AoE was created by Rick Goodman. Rise & Fall is the next "AoE" for this decade, and created by Rick Goodman. It's his second shot at an "ancient based RTS".

When I play Rise & Fall, it reminds me so much of AoE. Only this time you have more control over your units. You can mount walls, station troops on towers. And yes, Chariot Archers fire arrows while moving! Rise & Fall is everything you ever dreamt for AoE to be.

Maybe Rise and Fall is the next AoE. Maybe it is millions of times better. Maybe you want us to all come and join Rise and Fall Heaven.

Whatever. It dosen't really justify you coming to an AoE forum and telling us its time for AoE to die, especially as an outsider who hasn't been one of those keeping the game community alive. I've seen many do it, and I consider it trolling.

He kinda reminds me of MS telling us how we should play AoEIII instead...

I'm sure they'll keep at least Conquerors alive, it had at least 1000 players at any one time and that's far too many to see it go. I think Blitz may be right though, even if it does continue elsewhere, which it probably will, AoE will never be quite the same again without the Zone. Though I haven't played there for ages, I'm aware how important it is to AoE's survival. Seeing the zone die like that (unless you consider the sort of gimmicky crap that will remain there being alive) really brings home the reality that games do have a limited lifespan. It makes you wonder how long people will still be designing scenarios, how long the game will still be in stores etc. Still, I think we should enjoy the years we have ahead of us and not worry too much about the future.

It did have to happen one day, but I think it's sad to see Microsoft's selfishness bring such an early end to the place.

I don't understand. Since we're the official site for AoE/RoR, and probably the only active community left for this game, why don't we recreate AoEH as a gathering site for all the players out there? If we can do so before the Zone closes down, I'm sure we can retain a lot of players out there. No doubt, we'll also liven up this place by quite a bit.

NOTE: I don't mean to troll in this post, I'm simply curious.

I wonder...do most of you here who still play AOE fairly regularly play AOE2, AOM and/or AOE3 aswell? Because, personally, I never got into AOE3's game style, but I absolutely love AOM:TT - and for fun I play ROR sometimes too (usually just the campaigns because I suck at multiplayer). But I thought maybe some of you dislike those games, and so that's the reason you still play AOE/ROR a lot? Or maybe you just like all of them, lol.

Just curious

I love AoK (and TC) a lot too, but not as much as AoE/RoR. I do know that many of the forumers here enjoy AoK too (Dangrimm for example). As for AoE3... I'm quite ok with it, since I've only tried the demo. I do know that many AoEers and AoKers dislike it, though.

Well, I played Empire Earth a little and saw AOM (didn't like the graphics much). I toyed a bit with the AoK demo. The AI of EE was too hard for me, and I didn't like its graphics - when you zoom in a lot the polygons are all too obvious - the canned phrases (the grunts of the Stone Age villagers were okay but I grew tired of that "By the Gods" pretty soon. My main objection is that those games are in a way all the same: you have a bunch of units with different health and attack strengths, different canned phrases and looks, and when you have explored one game you've basically explored them all.

Working now. Good.

Yes the polygon graphics in EE are a let down to some, the main reason for me being into it is because I, perversely or otherwise, feel it plays more like AoE than AoK does. The graphics are good enough, moddable to an extent and people don't usually play zoomed in because like most other RTS games you want to be able to see as much of the map and as many of the troops as possible, so zooming in is really just for cinematics, where the blocky graphics can be overlooked because it's the creativity behind the cinematic that is what is important.

The AI is a pain, it was a clumsily executed attempt to help the CP avoid being outboomed or rushed too quickly, to provide a consistent challenge. The patches sorted out the imbalance a bit. It is easily tweaked in custom scenarios, and the editor still stands as better than in games that came after it. EmpiresoTMW has an improved version of the EE editor which stands head and shoulders above RoN, AoM and AoE3.
