No, it's only like this for farms to balance the wood cost and make them last longer.
I usually do it like this:
Gazelles: First kill all gazelles nearby with all hunters, then build a storage pit right next to the dead bodies. Have 3-4 villagers on each.
Elephants: I usually lure them to a pit with five villagers minimum (take a shot or two, run away until the phant stops, take a shot again until it's near the pit, kill). You can have many villagers on an elephant corpse, but be sure not to have too many.
Berries: First build a granary next to them, then have 3-4 villagers per bush.
Fishing with villagers: More than two villagers on the same fish will make them go idle most of the time, so don't use too many. Remember to build a storage pit close by, because villagers don't deposit food at the dock.
Fishing with boats: I tend to have 4-5 fishing boats on each patch. Remember to build a dock from time to time so your boats don't have to travel too far.
Lions/aligators: These give very few food, rot very fast once dead and injure your villagers too. Don't hunt them, unless you find yourself in a situation where you need 50 food urgently fast and can't find other food sources.
I hope this helps you a bit. Take this as suggestions, not rules you have to stick to though. There's nothing wrong with playing in a different way.
While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.
