Hi. Ordered the AOE Gold Edition on Game. Won't be able to play until I come off holiday, but just wondering what system requirements there are, and what systems can support it. I can get easily worried at times...sorry.

Got XP (Pro, as it appears), but the thing is, even EE and EE:AOC work on that (only AOC says XP for system requirements out of EE games 1 and the exp), and AOE Gold Edition has XP listed. Would it be safe there?

What about the 1Mb graphics card? Since as Doom 3 has had top graphics on the computer, plus I've played a load of other games with higher than DirectX 5, would it still be safe there?

And also the P120 MHz...what about that? I think it is higher than that on the computer.

Plus the RAM and hard disk space...well, 4 x CD-ROM is already on the computer because EE and EE:AOC are on and working very well, and there is lots of disk free space apparently.

Just curious about whether it might work or not on the computer. Classical game, proud to be able to be reaquanted with it soon (well, in two Saturdays for me, really...but still, would rather have good news or bad news sooner than later).

Thanks for any help you can give.

If anyone has higher systems still use AOE, could you please reassure me...I can get worried easily at times...

PS: Starfleet Command still works on XP Pro, and that game is from around 1999 (works quite well, actually...sure, when there's a lot on the screen it goes a bit jerky and slow...but sometimes games can do that, I guess).

Hello. You do sound rather paranoid. AoE is the oldest game that has a Heaven in Heavengames. It came out in 1997. I think it would be easier to answer your question if you could give us the specs of your current PC. Anyway, I think AoE would easily work on it, it's so old.

Anyway, what makes you think that newer systems won't play AoE? The only problem would be WinXP, but the game runs fine on it. The more the better for the other specs.

*edit* AoE runs easily on my Pentium 166MHz fossil which was bought in 1996.

Actually, I think it'll run fine on XP Pro, it's the rest that bothered me (and you guessed right...I'm paranoid...you seriously guessed right). It does say on Game that XP is a system it can run on in the system requirements section. Actually, I also say that because Starfleet Command, around 1999, runs on XP Pro (some people had an error message, I've had the same...but I close the error message and play Starfleet Command just fine...it crashed once, but any game can do that once in a while). Empire Earth actually runs well, and XP Pro is on (from what I can tell...it mentions Professional in the help box). Even Empire Earth: Art Of Conquest runs fine...that also says XP, but it seems XP Pro is on.

That's the Game site with AOE Gold Edition I was looking on.

Doom 3 works on top graphics, I think. I just have this idea that AOE might not be able to keep up with the tech.

Thanks for the help.

You may have problems in XP but you may have problems with any OS. AoE is an MS game, so you can expect trouble. Most of the time it will work allright - but how do you manage to run XP on a system with a 125 MHz processor? Win 95 barely ran on my old computer with those specs.

XP Pro is on a higher system I think. The computer is quite advanced now, at the moment (to be able to run Doom 3 on high graphics...though Doom 3 did get a bit boring according to my Brother...I wanted to get it finished in the end, though...quite long).

Also another question...what is the total maximum population for a side (taking into mind the settings for the scenario)?

Peter, I think Grunk meant that the minimum specs for running AoE is a 120MHz CPU. It didn't refer to his current system. I doubt anybody would still have such an old computer anyway. Well, the more correct system requirements for AoE/RoR is actually as follows (what it says on my AoE Gold case, at least):

Win95 or later, 90MHz CPU, 16MB RAM, 235MB HD space, etc.

The only problems with playing old games on newer systems is the compatibility with the OS. WinXP is known to create a lot of problems with DOS-based games. A lot of my old games can't run on my current system already, so I have to use my old PC for the job. Other than the OS, it's "the more the merrier" for the other specs. On newer systems with huge amounts of memory and processor speed, running AoE bores your computer to tears.

Regarding your question, I'm not sure what you mean by "taking into mind the settings for the scenario", but the maximum population allowed in any game is 200 per player.

Hi, Grunk! Welcome.

AoE and RoR will NOT pose any problem at all on modern systems.

You can run it on any low-spec system as well as on any high end system.

Overall, these games will not give you any headaches, they are super-compatible!

If you play AoE/RoR online, you MUST configure your Firewall to open the ports required to play in the Zone and to play DirectX7 games. These are listed somewhere in the Microsoft site, under the game's Web pages. If you will not play online, then don't bother at all.

Warning: About single player and multiplayer.

If you play online you must have all the latest patches installed (AoE 1.0C and RoR 1.0a). When you install these patches, unfortunately, you won't have success saving solo games and campaigns whenever units are fighting and moving around in the sceen. So, if you have the latest patches installed and you are playing in Single-player, only save the game when there is not fighting in the screen and you should be fine.

You will enjoy this game a lot - I'm still playing it after all these years!...

Oh, I just remembered one thing:

Why don't you go ahead and buy also the Age of Kings Gold Edition? You get Age of Kings and The Conquerors Expansion, which are mighty fine and enjoyable games - which you'll want to have around also for a long time!

And everything good about compatibility, etc. that I said on AoE/RoR is also valid for AoK/AoC --> Super-compatible, require same settings for multiplayer, etc. Oh, and save game problemts do not exist.

Wise_Max is the slowest player on Earth.
But Wise_Max has a lot of fun playing. So, he always wins even when he loses the game. And he made Friends.
Is that Wise or what?...

Thanks for the help. I don't really think WinXP Pro poses a problem for Age Of Empires - Empire Earth runs fine on it (on Game, it didn't list EE having XP as a system requirement). Empire Earth: The Art Of Conquest works fine on XP Pro (and XP is listed instead of XP Pro on Game). Actually, I think any problems will be more minor, actually, refering to Starfleet Command - some people have tried to get it going on XP, and on XP Pro, like the others, I've also had an error message, but ignore it and can go ahead and play the game (I think it might be connected to auto-run and such), and the game has only crashed once. So, hopefully XP Pro doesn't cause any trouble (Age Of Empires Gold Edition, in the link I provided, lists XP as a possible OS, so I don't think XP Pro could cause much trouble). XP Pro would still be okay, wouldn't it?

Actually, aside from still wondering about XP Pro, I'd like to answer a question too. I chose the Age Of Empires Gold Edition because it was quite cheap on Game (4.99). Plus, I like it a lot, and wanted to be reaquainted with it (due to something I'm planning on Empire Earth: The Art Of Conquest...and I had to visit The Academy area of this site...just to visit old memories...interesting how AOE can be inspirational and also a great memory that brings back a passion for it). The Gold Edition Of AOE II was a bit more expensive (and since I've spent 50.46 on four DVDs lately, about 13.99 on a mobile phone face plate...AOE Gold Edition seems the best first choice). Perhaps the other editions will wait till the future.

Also, aside from curious about XP Pro, I'd also like to know how to get hold of the old Hittite campaign without having to get the demo. Thanks for the help.

I started a separate topic regarding the OS...the other system requirements should be fine now. The other topic regards only the OS and something to do with Compatibility Mode.

Thanks. Actually, my interest in AOE was rekindled in remembering the Hittite campaign, etc. In Empire Earth, or the expansion, I wanted to start a scenario in the same style as the one Hittite level where you start with two priests...and it went from there. Visited Age Of Empires Heaven...went from there even more.

It is okay to run on XP Pro, though, right? I hope it is...Thanks for the help. When I come off holiday I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy playing the game (going on holiday on Saturday...ordered the game last night...hopefully by luck it comes tomorrow, but whenever it comes, hope it works and I might have something to look forward to when I come home, as well as looking forward to university).

By the way, for single player on the computer, what patches might I require? Thanks.

I think it's better for you to download the patches anyway. They fix existing problems with the game that might occur even in SP. It's fast to download and easy to install. I'd recommend downloading it.

And not only do the patches fix bugs, they create new bugs for new patches!
