For starters ,lets get the slang outta the way-

Ok, some of it even I dont understand, but the stuff I do know is pretty much listed here:

Boom- Also used in AoK ,as you might know, it is a surge in economic growth achieved by making a whole ton of villagers- its easier to do in aoe1, because town centers only cost 200 wood.

Medit- Meditteranean map

Conti- Continental map type

Hills- Hill country map type (specific to rise of rome)

Island- Any type of map that has the players starting on a piece of land surrounded completely by water

RM- Random Map

DM- Death Match

Clubbers- Clubmen

Impy- Improved Bowman

Compie- Composite Bowman

Horse- Can refer to scout or cavalry unit, check what age the player whos saying it is in

CA- Chariot Archer, probably them ost common unit used in bronze age warfare

HA- Horse Archer, usually follows CA's oncethe player gets to the iron age

EA- Elephant Archer, big fat load of hitpoints, available in the iron age

WA- War elephant, load of hitpoints with a melee attack

ST- Stone thrower, the most primitive, but nonetheless effective siege engine, almost essential if you encounter walls or towers en masse

Cata- Either cataphract, or catapult, normally the latter

HC- Heavy Cavalry

Trush- Tool rush, roughly the equivalent of a Flush in aok, except that the player doesnt harrass, they just attack head on

Boat Boom- A massive surge of population, mainly fishing boats, this more effective than the villager boom befoe the bronze age due otthe fact you can make multiple docks earlier than multple town centers

TC- Town Center, probably the most powerful building in the game

Range- Archery Range, where you build archers

Shop- Siege workshop

Workshop- Siege workshop

BK- Siege workshop (BK is the hotkey for it so I guess thats where it comes from)

Heles- Helepolis (plural)

Hoyohoyo- Either referring to the cheat code, or to priests themselves

n00b- Can either be an insult or the truth, it means newbie

Pult- Catapult

Hpult- Heavy Catapult

Pwned- Owned, meaning beaten badly (God knows where the P comes from)

Owned- Owned, meaning beaten badly

w00t- I tihnk its kinda like wahoo

Axer- Axeman

Straggler- A tree that resides beside or near your town center

Well, I think thats enough abbreviations to get familiar with aoe on the zone, onto strategy.

Many strats ca be used, of course, but the majority of them rely upon a very powerful economy, similar to aok. Probably the most widely used strategy is the CA rush, which involves gettign a reasonably quick bronze age time and creating lots of chariot archers to overrun your opponent. It works the best on land maps, such as highland, and hill country.

The execution of it is simple to do, and its easy to learn, and also gives you a basis from which to derive your own strategies. The best civs to use for htis are the assyrians, hittites, or shang.

Ok, as soon as you get into the game, order a villagers to build a house near where hes standing, and get antoher villager to help him build it. Order your town center to make a villager, and order the other villager to explore the immediate area around your base. While the villager is exploring, get the other villagers to cut straggler trees, while also continuously making villagers and making housing to keep up with the demand. Once you find some berries, put down a granary close to them, and toss all of your villagers except oen villager explorer onto them. Once you have about 5 or 6 villagers on them, which is enough to continuously make villagers, get a few on woodcutting, I normally get about 5. Once you have enough wood, put down a storage pit next to a forest, and, if you can do so, next to gazelle, gold or stone as well, tihs means that one storagep it takes the place of two. Anyway, once oyu plop down a pit, and have roughly 5 villagerso n woodcutting, get some more villagerso n the berries. In the meantime your scout has hopefully uncovered some other food sources, such as elephants, or gazelle. Once oyur initial berries are exhausted, move onto these. Once oyu have 24 villagers or thereabouts, save up and hit the tool age button. During your transition ,you shoud make sure to keep all of your villagers occupied, gathering food or wood. Put up a barracks before you hit the tool age. Once you have hit the tool age, put down a market and an archery range as soon as you can. Don't make more villagers, and if you run out of food, get your food gathering villagers on farming. Farms are different in aoe than aok, but the ocncept is similar. Build them near your granary or town center for faster harvesting. Once you have the required buildings and 800 food, start heading for the bronze age. During this time, oyu will probably want to move a fair few of your villagers onto wood from food, because chariots cost 70 wood and 40 food, I think. As soon as you hit the bronze age mark, go to your marketand research the wheel- it allows you make chariots as well as giving your economy a powerful boost. Start making villagers form your town center again, and put down one or two more archery ranges. Once the wheel has finished beign researched, start hotkeying chariots (press ctrl+a then press r until you have gone through all of your archery ranges). Aroudn this itme, dpeending upon the map size, your opponent should be found. Run your first chariots over there and hunt his villagers, and any military he has- dont destroy his buildings until you are sure you have eliminated all his mobile units, chariot archers are good for harrassing but you should leave the building killing until later. Always continue making chariot archers, whether you are winning or not, and also always make extra villagers. IF oyu are winning by a lot or have a fair few surplus bits of resources, you should consider putting up a government center, and then making a few additional town centers at gold mines and forests around the map. The new villagers form these tonw centers should give a boost in your resource income which can turn the tides of a war. If you have got many town centers making villagers ,and a fair few ranges pumping out CA's, then you should consider going to the iron age, which will alow you to make hte more powerful horse archers. Well, thats about all there is to it. The strategy is not too difficult to get the hang of, and it shouldnt take too long to master. Once oyu have the hang of it, then you could start experimenting using your own strategies, like yamato cavalry ruhsing, or tool rushing.

Well, I tihnk thats the basics covered, i might see you on the zone , im ANZAC_slippery

Welcome to the forums

Dangrimm...very nice! However, just to clear some things up:

Quote:

n00b- Can either be an insult or the truth, it means newbie

A n00b and a newb are different things. A newb is a new player, nothing wrong with that. A n00b is a player of any age or rank that acts like a moron.

Quote:

Pwned- Owned, meaning beaten badly (God knows where the P comes from)

It's sort of a leet-speak. "p" is next to "o" on the QWERTY keyboard.

As for basics of the game, read our FAQ/Strategies. There is plenty of stuff to help you there.

Well, you can read through our strats in the main site. We even have a page listing all AoE/RoR abbreviations.

Anyway, just to be more specific. Stragglers aren't just isolated trees standing close to your TC at the start of the game. They're the 75 wood ones. They play such an important role during my RM starts. If I get bad stragglers I get slowed down and it does make quite a lot of difference if you're playing against good players. Also, medit is only available in RoR and not AoE. Yes, the former has a better variety of map types.

Dangrimm has made a pretty good intro to the basics. However, I think he's referring generally to a land-based strat which works best only on land maps. On water maps the strat and result of the game could be very different. For example, on medit games, players who go for a CA rush on me usually fail miserably because I have a way larger economy (I take the sea while they have to struggle with land food sources) and my compies murder their CAs. You'll have to read these strats up for yourself at the Academy. For example, on different maps you'll want different villager highs before you go to Tool.

Oh yep, there's also nomad, but it's a way of starting RM, not an age by itself. You get only 1 villager and you decide where you want your first TC to be, then you start off from there. Quite an interesting way to play, I'd say. I think I'll play it more often now...

yea we have that in aok and aoc...but theres a seperate custom scenario type.Mostly called Land Nomad. which is basically the same thing but in an arabia fashion (aok) i sometimes play that.... i think i should buy aoe1 expansion... hm...how much is that... i think it would be like $10 right?

Or maybe even cheaper, since it's so old. I don't think they sell RoR as a standalone expansion pack out there in stores now. I think only the Gold Edition's available?
