I always get beaten by heaps of enemy Units against Ballista Towers. Should I use alternatives?


I also get a far bigger beating when two Armies are attacking me (even when another Army is defending)

A mix is the best thing to to. Build lots of towers and units.
Units can comabat towers cause u won't be able to get ur villagers close enough.

Hmmmm.... I assume that you are talking about towers in Deathmatch.

Ballista Towers usially are essential to:

a) Defend against Elephants (War elephants now can really screw them, but hey, they're still an option)
b) Defend the perimeter where you want to mine gold, have TC's up and spit Villagers to go for resources
c) Defend unit production zones, so that your buildings last longer

The secret is to use ALWAYS strong units (like centurions or elephants) to team with the towers. In RoR, it helps a lot to have lots of Scythes mountinh guard, because Scythes do splash damage, are the natural counters of Siege weapons (Stone Throwers and Catapults) and it is essential to neutralize catapults (the only thing Towers fear).
If you are facing War Elephants (in RoR only) then you must use either ballistas (the best) in stand ground stance, or, the next best, Horce Archers in numbers, in the middle of the towers.

Now a note about tower placement.

Towers are best placed as follows:

On top of hills - super best.
Covering each other (essential)
Behind houses or walls (but never close-up, always with 1 tile in between, to avoid spiull damage from scythes, catapults and war elephants).
The more obstacles between a tower and the enemy, the better it is - dealing damage for free!

The most annoying tricks:

If you are being attacked by war Elephants, a few priests hidden back near the towers can really help you to get a bigger, better army, LOL!

The most annoying things about Towers:

If you are being hit by Cats and you don't have a good enough reaction force, you'll lose the Towers.

Towers DO NOT go out and kill your enemies. Only your Army can do that.


Walls and Towers are very good to "entertain" your enemy if you get to wall him up in his town. You super-huge army, that you amassed while you were freely roaming the map for resources, will finish him.

Conversely, if you wall yourself up and are not aggressive, you'll end up losing.

Yes, towers are just archers that can't move. Massed Cats or HCats turn them into rubble, so you need good counters such as scythes to prevent that from happening. However, towers cannot stop an opponent from destroying your base. It can only hold them out for so long. Moreover, all the opponent has to do is to ignore your towers and just kill whatever you're trying to protect (eg, villies).

If you ask me, I'd say towers, even when massed, aren't of much use. Stone will eventually run out, and if the game gets dragged into a war of attrition, you'll just lose everything. I don't play DM (I've tried ), but I'm pretty sure nobody really bothers to tower up much right at the start of the game. They go for units first to attack. After all, if you're initial attack is successful enough to screw up your opponent, there's no need to build towers for defence at all.

For RM, towers are quite useless. I never bother to tower these days.

I do tower ,but only one tower, if i think i will be trushed. ITs cheap for the 50 food tower upgrade bonus, and if your under tool attack, IMO, the one watch tower placed right can be more effective than say the 1.5 axemen you would get from the 50 food and the spent vilieseconds on the tower.

Yes, in RM maps, especially conti, towering at strategic points (such as near woodies) is good.

I think Upnotep's talking about DM though.

And only if the number of attackers is small. After all the tower can attack but one unit at a time. And quite often it will be the wrong one.

You could use Heavy Horse Archers distracting by attacking and dodging catapult missiles. Can be time consuming, the more archers the quicker but harder to dodge.

If stone is abundant, use towers to distract the attacker from your town while your army responds.

But sometimes enemies do run past towers, fast units like Cataphracts can avoid the towers and go on sacking your city and killing all your villages. Just build walls 1 tile (do this so I can repair the wall later and avoid area damge) in front of the tower. Infantry and cavalry will likely die before breaking through. Disadvantage to building 1 tile is archers with the same range as towers or more can just attack the wall and break through.
