I played a game a few days ago on the zone in the quirinal room. one of the opponents was roman and i got yamato (random civs). not very far in the game i had cataphracts [none of the enemys ever made camels!] and i had a lot of HAs. when i aw that the roman had scythe chariots and HELEPOLI i started makeing stone throwers to help them out. it was to late. NOTHING i had or my partner could stop the heepoli, heavy cats he had now, and scythe chariots.
i played a game today and ironed in 22:30 with roman. i uickly build 8 ballistas and sent them to the enmys town. GAME OVER for that enemy. he resigned. then i upgraded to helepolises. i had 8 helepoli and 4 catapults and took out the other enemy that had gotten tool rushed by my allie early on. the other enemy got swept up by my heavy cats and helepoli and my allies HAs.

my conclusion is that helepoli are way way way way too powerful. with a large group of them they canstop nething. [except havey cats but many civs dont even get cats! [only STs]]
i think that helepoli should be tamed down. with maybe 20 attack or so. maybe 25 i guess but not more than 25. thx for reading this.
please post your stories about helepoli here or how you feel about them

There are many ways to beat hele's. The most obvious one is cats. (not hvy cats) Others are longswordsman/legionaries if used in quantity. Also CA or HA if used in quantity. Use ST mixed with composite bowmen. The key is to catch them moving when they cant fire and in any case attack in a line not a column. If you attack in a column they will keep killing the head of the line.

i just find it very hard to make enough swordsmen to take out a lot of helepoli. the helepoli just keep shooitn gand shooting an dshooting and the swordsmen just keep falling before they get there... even if you have a lot of them. then my STs got fought off by his scythes and my HAs were fought off by his HCats

Swordsmen can NEVER kill a masse of Heles, period. Not even Choson legions.

Being a Hele-freak myself, I'd say the only units that can kill range-12 Heles are: (in that order)

1. Make sure the hele player doesn't get to iron.
2. Stonies/Cats/HCats with engineering.
3. Priests (especially Egyptian ones).
4. Huge amount of range-10 Horse Archers, but expect serious damage on your side too.
5. Tower offense with A LOT of vills, backed up with other units for suicidal destraction.
6. Same as 4 but with fully upgraded Chariot Archers.
?. Of course, Heles itself.

I have never seen an army of hand-to-hand units be a able to kill a Hele army. Not even Carthaginian or Persian Armored Eles.

P.S.: My favorite civs: Roman & Minoan

Ballistas massacre all archers, minoan long range ones or not. With engineering helepoli can hit minoan compys, no?

Helepoli destroy everything in their path EXCEPT choson ballista towers and catapults. Thats all. Those are the only two things that can stand up to them. Legion upgrade is not worth it, you will have severe casualities. Range 10 HAs are massacred.

Any smart player will include another unit with his helepoli. Perhaps it is scythe chariots...say bye bye to your priests.

Helepoli are too powerful, just as the old days where the all hittite catapult army dominated and there was no real counter. Well that cat/HHA army still dominates IMHO and actually an ele archer/catapult combo seems to work well on helepoli, tho very expensive. The trick is to not let him make it to iron age in the first place

scythe chariots can kill helepolis, ships kill enough to win the resource battle vs them. Chariot archers on hills can kill some here and there hopefully weakening the pack, but you'll be losing the resource war. Legions coming from 3 directions at once can take them out, but again you'll probably lose all the legions and end up losing the battle. Best option is to ignore the helepolis and go kill his villagers, then whittle away the helepolis army. Just make sure every time you attack your kill 3 or 4, they need about 15-20 helepolis to be truly effective.

KA_Breydel,

You forgot one thing. Choson Ballista Towers. Of course if the Hele player has some engineered cats or hevy cats, the problem is solved, but these towers will stop Helepolis. Found that trying to take down a Wonder, and there was a ton of Choson BTowers, hehe. We were so sure to destroy the Wonder, but we lost.

Sting & Omnivac,

You're both right, I forgot to mention the Choson towers. They both have range 12 but the towers will certainly win. I think in that case, the Hele player is forced to use a Cats/Hele combo. (Or maybe a HUGE mass of slingers is also worth a try to take some towers down, donno. They're probably too weak with their 25 HP's, piercing armor or not.).

I also think of the range 13 Hittite war galleys (for maps like narrows, I think it can be done).

Omnivac, in that game, if you checked your enemy's race, then you should have expected a lot of Choson towers & Priests if he built a wonder.
