This topic is to discuss better ways to communicate in multi-player games. Every time I get partners that won't communicate I lose, there is nothing more frustrating IMO. Below is an example of what I mean.

well I signed on on Christmas to play a quick game, found 5 people I didn't know and joined the game. I got off to a horrible start, told my allies I was going to need help early since I was on the flank. I get scout ship rushed, fight it off and manage to bronze around 19 minutes, at this point 100% of my food is comiing from fishing ships so I have to protect the sea. About 20 minutes the first chariot archers enter my town from my backside, I had dock blocked but he got 1 villager by. I tell my allies I need help, I have no troops yet and the assy is on me with chariot archers... what do I get, silence, a minute or two later I say again I need help soon or I'm dead... again silence, I'm losing badly I need some food to stand a chance I say I need food now or I'm dead, they both tribute me all of their food, lol... now I'm sitting with almost 1500 food and severly hurting in all other areas. I tell them again I need troops I'm pinned in my chariot archers and I can't run, I can't field an army as big as him either... the reply... I just gave you all my food. Well this frustrated me and I made some comments I shouldn't of but oh well they'll forgive me or I guess I won't play with them again.

I definantly agree its very very frustrating when your partners won't communicate with you. I also love it when you look at the military score 20 mins into the game and see your partner has 2 kills and 30 losses and yet he never said a word :-).

Some people just arn't very good team players period.

Oh yeah this is annoying. You can't even compared that to playing with regular teammates, or even players you play for the first, but understand the teams concept.

My turn with an example from last night (with regular teammates) where you can read Ne1 need ress? (Anyone need ressources?). Other teammates replies No. OK! or if in need, will say 120W or something like that.

Since we play a lot of random civs too, we make up our plan on what we got, where we are, and what are the enemies.

If someone run into trouble, he will get help, or in some case will get the fall back because no one can come to help in time, or busy fighting elsewhere. It's nice also to play with players that knows when they need help and not scream disaster when they see 4 chariot archers.

Bottom lines everyone should do are:

1) telling what they plan to do, very early. Assessing your start is a good thing too with conotations ranging from crappy start to sweet spot.

2) Any villager sneaking in should be reported.

3) You should tell when you go on the offensive, and send some pointers (number of vills dead, player x on the run, etc...).

4) inform others when naval battles are increasing, or if the sea is owned, or will be relatively easily won. It sucks fighting on the sea alone vs 3 or 4 others.

5) Position of enemies should be given as soon as they are discovered.

6) You should get writing relatively early in Bronze because it is very helpful.

7) With Writing, communication is still necessary, but it is very helpful to coordinate attacks and get some free exploration.

8) Late game communication involve building a Wonder, when, where, etc...

9) IF you have to resign at some point, well, you will say it before you're dead, and basically, wait for the permission of others to do so. The team should resign, and not players individually.

10) And finally, no matter what if you win or lose, change your chat to everyone and say GG at least. Resigning with no warnings is not cool.

well this sort of thing happened to me. I was playin random civs and i got Palmy...i was goin to be a feeder and i gave one person a bunch of stuff and then i get attacked....after 10 minutes of me saying help he comes with 7 chariot archers and they eventually get killed....after that nothing not even a single bit of help even when he was iron and he wasnt even getting attacked.

Omnivac: I am embarrassed at the number of times I have said "good game" before resigning, only to realize that I had forgotten to turn global chat back on and was talking, usually, to a dead ally. Doh!

I get irked when allies don't communicate, but it is difficult to get messages out when in the middle of a battle. I try, though. What we need (here's a nice dream) is a list of shorthand messages that everyone can understand. Now, there are some obvious ones most of us already know:

gg = good game
gl = good luck (an ominous feeling hits me when I see that)

But how about other common (and more urgent messages? For enemy position, I usually use a clock (red at 8 o' clock) and use compass directions occasionally, too (archers N of town). Beyond that, I don't have any standard way of communicating things. Anyone want to start a "universal list" of abbreviated messages? I'd start off, but my brain is now refusing to cooperate with me and the only one I can think of is:

Need 150W (W=Wood, S=Stone, G=Gold)

P.S. What I'd *really* like to see in Age of Kings is a text macro system, so you could just hit F10 (fer example) to send out a succintly worded message without having to type it whilst simultaneously trying to direct your last villager out of the path of a Hittite heavy catapult.

I can proudly say I do all the things Omni mentions, most of the time. I posted on this a while back and it is probably the most anoying thing about team games, that they are not really team games but rather 3 one vs one games on the same map. Of course they soon become 3 vs 1.
I actually started to work out shorthand messages using the taunts. The problem is that it is very difficult to get people to talk about team stuff before a game. The prevalent attitude out there is "start the game already".

I totally agree. Luckily for me I usually get allies who at least try to communicate... Unfortunately, I play quite a few games with a friend who is, well, not a hardcore ghetto newbie, but not yet intermediate yet either, so he's usually asking for help by 13-15 minutes. Since I try to bronze fast at the expense of Tool defense, this doesnt bode well. Worse, he always tries to evacuate to my town, sometimes leading to its discovery, despite my fervent protests... Oh well. He's getting better, and he only got RoR for Christmas .

Well, I can say that I truly agree with this. I get very angry when I ask my allies "hey guys can anyone spare some stone for walls? I need"

By the time I get the stone the cavs have entered my town, chased down my villagers and mercilessly slaughtered 9 of em, and taken out a few houses, and forced me to play defensively for a while. Moral of the story? Every second counts.

It happened once in a rated game, all he said was @9, then I said I am gonna be a bit slow cus gazelle for first food res, nothing, so I keep on saying things but no response, so I am vorried are the banging up on me??
I never got to know cus I dropped from the game.
But I follow all the rules omni said, gg,need help, attacking, saw a vill and so on.

BTW: I saw in a GX post something called dlg save, it is upposed to save the dialogue from a game, u know where to download it??

Communication is so underused in most games I have played. My last experience in an unrated room:

The middle player insisted on a wall between he and I on 3v3. Fine. I thought his efforts could be put to better use, since I was involved in a 2v1 on land and losing the sea to the other. I call for help, telling the other players what troops he has where and even which enemy has no defenders left in his town (Cost my whole strike force). My losses are horrific during the 15 odd seconds. (the f10 idea would work great. As would taunts, if there was a reasonable and consistent assignment of taunts available... But when my computer says "Give me some food", one player's computer has a WAV of Bart Simpson, and the other ally has a tastefully done homemade WAV of a particularly long burp.) Anyway, I have resigned myself to the fact that I am facing a 3v1, with my two "allies" off in some chat room. No they probably aren't communicating there, either, just watching the letters go by on the screen. However, then the cavalry arrives! One player tribs 150W to me, the other sends 3 upgraded scouts to my camp. I quickly send "WTF?" Anyway, the middle guy neglected walling the water route, so soon his town is filled with enemy troops. He doesn't say a word. I just kind of surmise it watching the scores changing. The only way I find out that he is under attack is on the achievements screen. I run my newly created forces up to his wall. I send "Del ur wall!" No response, so I send "Boom" and rubbleize it. Then 2 things happen. Middle guy changes me to enemy (and his towers and military attack me instead of the guys sacking his town, and the other "ally" begins building a wonder. Apparently this turn of events evokes the same confusion in the opponents that it did in me. They clear out everything mobile and charge after the wonder. At least he is fairly well defended and finishes the wonder in about 5 minutes, but is then completely overwhelmed by the massed armies. This gives me the opportunity to tranny in my forces and harass the rear of his onslaught as well as decimate all the opponents villies, while my middle "ally" is rampaging through my villies.

After the game, I try to make some sense of it all, and all I get from one is "You attacked my wall first" "I asked you to open it up" "I was being attacked" "I was coming to help" "Then why destroy my wall?" and on and on ad nauseum. The other had no explanation for why he didn't bother to inform us of the wonder. He had been planning it from the start, and that is why he didn't bother attacking. He wanted to save all his forces in reserve.

Anyway, an extreme case, but my experience with most players you don't know is that they don't tell you jack.

Sorry this went on way too long. I will reread it and see what I can drop. (Cut it by about a third.)

There must be communication between allies. There must be a way to facilitate that. There is not a text macro system, and a few function keys would not be enough. (I would rather have them be unit hotkeys anyway) The taunt system should work, but would require standardization and incorporation of useful taunts.


A possible solution is that as soon as one player get Reading, all allies get it. Yes, most good players get it anyway, but it would help those who get allied with people who don't. (I actually got into a game with someone who refused to get it so he could get the exploration bonus) I wish I could have researched it for him.

I try to communicate, but It is hard when I'm fighting for my life. Also, I have had people yell for help when they tool with 7 villagers, and wonder why their economy sucks. I wonder when to tribute to an ally? I have done so to keep someone in the game, but it has crippled my economy so much, that both of us were easy pickings. The other night, I played with a rookie, and did not tribute him because my economy would be hurt. As it turned out I won the game because, I did not help him. If I had, it was game over.

Roger Wilco isn't perfect yet, it doesn't work with a lot of setups... including mine . I think you can never be too occupied with battle that you can't talk, it only takes 5 seconds to reply. Sure you may have to wait a second to reply, but there should always be some time to reply. What I hate is the silence for 5-10 minutes when I repeatedly ask something.

Thats exactly right Ender. Some communications from your ally require immediate response but most don't. A wait of even a minute or more are ok. Its the total silence that lets you know its not really a team game.

Ender: the same thing goes for building a friggin' dock next time I ask for one - shoot it only takes 5 sec to send ONE vill to make a dock for trading and I'll even trib the wood. (Not venting on Ender, but responding to the "it only takes 5 sec")

And don't build the dock NEAR me, build it FAR AWAY! Sheesh...

um If I did that I don't remember the game. But there must of been a reason I couldn't build the dock, not sure what it was. Or maybe I just think your cute when your angry (hehe).
