I'd like to share another way of playing AoE/RoR. It is quite good and will force you to use new strats a lot of the time. Me and others have played a lot of games like this in the past 2 months or so.

First requirement is you need to have an open mind. If you are the Shang/Assyrian/Yamato inland/mediterranean type, then forget about this already.

The second player in the game screen choose a setting of his choice. Others do not have anything to say and there is no veto. So he can type, let's say, Narrows.

The third player decides starting ressources=medium.

the fourth player, and so on...

Dunno why it is like this or where it began, but the second player is always the first to choose, and the host will choose a setting after the last player, and the second player will continue if other settings are available.

Once a setting is decided by a player, it can't be changed, of course.

Settings up for grab are:

Map Type
Map Size
Victory Conditions
Starting Age
Starting Ressources
Reveal Map (on/off)
Fixed Positions (on/off)
Pop Limit (In RoR only)
Civs Choices (Random, Players choose their own, Enemy pick civs, no same civ in the game, no same civ in a team, etc...)
Teams (Top vs Bottom, Even vs Uneven, *assigned captains).

*Assigned captains is when a player choose this setting, he is automatically a captain, and must name the enemy captain. The enemy captain will have the first choice for his first ally, then the player choose one of his ally, the enemy captain continue and so on until all players are in a team.

Then you start the game.

Some of the odd settings, or settings that made me think *bleurk* turned out to be very interesting games most of the time. Don't be affraid of the settings and play the game, you will be surprised... and you'll even see some stuff you didn't think about yet, or that no ones really discuss in forums because they are not "popular" settings. Some are obvious and make sense to good players, but what is the best courses of action is really not known because there is no discussions.

As an example, one game was a gigantic map, 25 pop, Iron start with medium ressources. One player went for the economy, building more villagers (usual strat more or less), one player plucked down an archery range as his first action, built a horse archer and sent him on the hunt, while me I started to wall my area like crazy because I was at the end of my teams. Turned out the horsie found the "booming" player and started to kill a lot of villagers... Some villagers trying to sneak in near me bump into my walls. Sadly, a tranny came on the shores a few minutes later, etc, etc...

So if you're up to it, sometimes, stuck one of these between two games and try this out. It is very interesting for a change.

Yep, no doubt you get some interesting games doing that. I haven't heard of the "Captain" thingy, though. Sounds pretty cool. Of course, you gotta check your ego at the door. No sense getting upset about being chosen last.

I've even been won over to the Dark Side of Random Civs. I actually like it now. God only knows why. LOL

It's particularly enjoyable choosing a setting you know someone else hates. All in good fun, of course.

this will be something realy fun to do this saturday at the forum party. i will try to be there. my zone name i vcurrently use is UA_PheNoL__.
i also want to say RoR has made me a much better age player. i love to change the map types and sizes around and try random civs a lot. i wish there was a random map type/size. with ror i have learned to enjoy the diff. maps and all the diff. civs. i dont havea set strat i use like yam cav rush nemore either. sometimes i will tool rush and sometimes i may iron jump. well hell, yesterday i played a random civ game with all FREINDS and i was in a good mood so i just made a group of 25 clubbers and a group of 25 villagers and sent them in opposite directions! turned out that the 25 clubbers killed over 35 of the red opponents shang villagers and a few houses and my 25 villagers killed 7 blue farmers and 4 farms and 3 houses. but then red made sentry towers when i wasnt watching and started attacking my clubbers with villagers. then blue had his yellow ally come into his town and kill all of my 25 villagers with two upgraded cav! they really got mad and i told em to lighten up a bit. it was the funniest thing ive seen in aoe in a long time!

Saturday

Age of Empires: Rise of Rome
in
Palatine Room

First Meeting (Mostly for Euro-Agers)
1 PM Eastern Standard Time

Second Meeting
10 PM Eastern Standard Time

Meetings last as long as people are in the room (7 hours was my longest stint ). Usually, there is from 15 to 50 players or so. I usually go to the second meeting, and can make it between 10 and 11 PM EST. Tomorrow, I may arrive a little late, because I have a party before. I may type slowly, talk incoherently, and lose most of my games.

If having an open mind means putting up with people who send 101 clubmen after you in stone, then my mind has folded in on itself.

I enjoy ranting at them...."this isn't what the games about....you barbarian..."
You get the idea?

But i might try Omnivac's idea one day - sounds good ;^)

Omni,

I never tried your new settings but I love them already. Post-iron war with poplim25 seems very fun to me.

P.S.: What is the difference between a form party and normal games?

OK....I hate to take credit for this, but if my memory serves me correctly, I think I came up with this one night when we were haggling over settings...or maybe just couldn't make up our mind!

I think it started with our first ever POP 25 game!

I know Angel Mack hates Pop 25 games so I usually pick THAT setting when he's playing. *GRIN*

It's a very kewl setting. One that is very challenging and tactical when you are restricted by your pop. Try this on default nomad too!

It is a blast, and a real stray from the norm. Try it ... you'll like it!

Cheers,
Vidguy

To take the opposite side of the argument... 25 pop games are fun occassionally but they really aren't a very good setting IMO. Its just too hard to kill anyone off with that low of a limit. Though flooding the map with towers is kinda fun. Big thing to watch out for, don't make 25 villagers! I always end up doing that in tool and having to delete some.

Well, I've now discovered that a 25 pop game on small islands is very difficult.

I've decided that on these types of games, it boils down to "he who has the cat tris or Jugs wins".

Once you have towered the hell outta your island, that's the only way to effectively clean out a landing spot and a player. Oh well, made for a long game that see-sawed all over the place!

Cheers,
Vidguy

hehehe. That was one heck of a game last night though. Originally the settings were 3v3, Small islands, large map, reveal map, high resources, pop 25, random civs. Myself, Vid, and Mack were all on the same team and the Random Gods truely blessed us with Minoan (Mack,) Shang (Vid,) and Phoe (Myself.) our opponents (Omni, legOfAhab, and Spineman,) well, i forgot, but I know it wasnt pretty. We thought we had an easy victoy until Omnivacs computer decided that there wa no hope and disconnected at the 9:36 mark. At this point we went ffa and what a game it was! An hour+ long struggle with no definitive victor at any point, although it looked as if Mack and Spineman were definately on top at certain points, although at the hour mark Spine unfortunately disconnected. In the end Jugs definately won the game, and thankfully I had Phoes super jugs which helped me recoup out of nowhere. These settings definately lead to some great games, and just require an open mind like Omni said, although good connections would be a nice plus.

You guys want a REALLY interesting game? Put two players as the same player (i am talking about colors). That way you can have one player running the town and one running the military. I haven't tried it in a big game (cause i haven't had time) but i figure it might be pretty cool.

coop makes me mad

I end up fighting with players who stick their first 18 villagers (exaggerated) on berries, and I cant get a single vill for socuting and wood! They assure me they "know what they are doing"...

I have done a few coops in my day, I usually control economy and the other guy controls military, at least thats the way I like it
