I really want to increase my skill in this game. And so I have decided to start practicing Single Player RM games on all types of maps.

As yet I am not into rushing or booming. Or anything fancy. I just want to learn to hold my own against the computer on Easiest up to Moderate.

So, since I will be using a variety of maps, I thought I'd ask you:

1. Which civ is best on Water maps?

2. Which civ is best on Land maps?

3. And which one is best for a combination Water/Land situation?

I want to become a good, solid player. Nothing spectacular. Just solid.

Best water civ for easiest to moderate,
around-about Yamato.

Best land civ...
All-around, for defense, offense, buildings, and units... Well Carthage or Phoencia has the medium units (cav but not cataphract, hosre archer but not heavy) and you can use any combo with these civs, and counter any if you know what your enemy's army is made of...

All Around...
Roman and many others... Macedonian

I mean, this is what I think (I thought about this stuff long and hard)

*The might of Carthage, victors from the Cedars of Lebanon to the Pillars of Hercules,
the great traders and the worlds greatest navy.
Prepare to be defeated!
*We are Macedonians, we don't convert that easily.

If your trying toget competitive on the Zone go through blitze's boom oreder. Booming will have a much better impact on how you play than your civ. but...

For water

Yams
good economy
+ best early tool + Iron navy
+ best tool
+good early bronze
- bad late bronze
- horrid Iron
- gotta keep the pressure on em all the time

good civ to teach ya how to tool rush and use it to your advantage

Minoan

+ Great economy
+ Great navy
+ Best bronze army
+ good Iron
- no fast unit outside camesl/cav
- average tool on land
- need to keep pressure on if playing hittite

Hittite

+ good tool army
+ good bronze army
+ Best Iron army
+ best navy if they get 20+ ships
+ great CA and ST
+ can cause some serius trouble by your shore.
- average economy till Iron
- navy isn't good till late tool
- needs to survive tool on sea to be able to take advantage of there bonus

Shang

+best economy
+ Fast and large tool
+ fast and large bronze
+ very versatile
-must when sea fast
-no overpowering bronze
-crappy late iron
- must be bigger and faster or they won't win.

Rome

+ Great tool
+ good economy, fastest dock
+ good early bronze
+ sentry towers + ST are almost an invincible force on medit
+ 75 stone towers
+ great Iron
+ lining enemies coast with sentry towers can be trouble
- has to towerup quick and Iron fast after bronze
- needs to attack in tool/early bronze

SaSa408:
islands - Tool navy, bronze navy, wood conservation. Mino, hittite, yammy, phoenie, egypt, babs.
Medit - Tool navy, bronze warfare, fishing. Mino, hittite, yammy, shang, palmy, mace, egypt, assy, phoenie.
Conti - Tool warfare, bronze navy. Yammy, hittite, mino, shang, phoenie, babs, roman, sumie.
Land - Tool warfare, farms, gold conservation. That means sumie, roman, shang, hittite, egypt, babs, phoenie.

I assumed rookie to inter level, and the civs are roughly in the order of most adapted to worst adapted to a given setting. For any given map I didn't include those that aren't much good there.

Hope this helps.

These suggestions are just what I was hoping for.

I took Caesar Constintine's suggestion to play Carthage on Land maps. And I just finished playing Carthage on Highland and WON! I got to Bronze in good time and kept pumping out villies. Everybody was chopping or mining - and I had a huge "fleet" of Stone Throwers (and archers) and sent them forth.

I feel a bit at home with Carthage as that's who I am when I play the 2nd Scn of 1st P.War.

I like Highland better than Hills Country - at least there was a little stream going through and a few fish!

Gonna try some of the other suggestions now.

Congrats ! Not bad
And with Carthage too - it took me a hell of a time before I won a single game with them - and then it was on water. Lol.

I can't even win with Carthage on Highland

*The might of Carthage, victors from the Cedars of Lebanon to the Pillars of Hercules,
the great traders and the worlds greatest navy.
Prepare to be defeated!
*We are Macedonians, we don't convert that easily.

Peter and Caesar C,

You guys wouldn't be putting me on now would you?

Even if you are, I appreciate your encouragement.

No - most people agree that Carthage is the second or third worst civilization in the game. If you can win with them, you can win with almost any civ. Take heart.

Oh no, No worries I was complimenting you- as in, I can only win with Carthage on Land maps with water (continental, meditereanian) On Highland, I can never win with anyone.

But even so, Carthage is my favorite civ there is just something special about them. Also try playing them on water maps- they will rule the seas (my signature)
