Someone posted here they liked Hill Country Nomad tiny map.

So I thought I'd give it a whirl. Instead it gave me a whirl.

I've tried 3 times today. Total failure.

I hate not having water and all the fish and boats.

Still the map is very straightforward, and I get going really strong in the beginning with villies, berries, wood, houses, Granary, Storage Pit, Barracks - and Tool.

But then the enemy creeps in before I can get strong.

I just hate being undermined before I get my plans underway.

And I hate farming as opposed to fishing.

And it is so tempting to push the "quit" button.

It's my dumb middle game that sags. I think my starting game goes forward fast. But then something erodes, and I can see the opponant's score soar above mine.

I was playing single play. Not on the Zone. Maybe I should go to the Zone and pray for an idiot to play with.

Ackkkkk.

No! I am nice, normal, wonderful, happy, etc.,etc.

I am not masochistic!

But I want to win a few...

And don't you dare tell me to start playing Sim City instead of AoE.

ROFL.

Really now, Sara, I won't advise you to do anything of the kind. It's simply so that hill country maps are the worst of the worst of the worst (go on like that for a while) to win. That's why I made it my business to play loads of large hill country maps with 1 vs 3, default start, no reveal, etc. Akk, I win about 50 % or a bit more at hard - and that took me a lot of practice, at first it was 0 % wins. Without that practice, playing them is more like doing penance. Hence my question.

So I am not the only one who finds Hill Country hard. Thanks for telling me that.

So I think now I will do what I want to do and that means playing water maps.

(But of course we know that includes the 2nd Scn. of the First Punic War. Grrrrrrr. )

Hi Sara!,

When you feel that you need more challenge, I think you gonna return to hills country maps. Btw, like everybody, you have to take each step of the ladder to reach the top .

And, if you win very much on water maps, maybe it's the time to kick the butts of the Romans in the 2nd of First Punic War... (...After talking about this one around one year, I'm sure you gonna drink a couple of beers when you gonna win. !!!! )

see ya!

Good point that - don't try to start at hardest if you don't master the levels below. Rome wasn't built in a day ( and it wasn't destroyed in a day too, probably took them a bit longer to do that).
Hm, try the small islands boogie or the Continental stomp and see if you don't like that kind of music better

Peter, what on earth makes you think I am playing on hardest??? Thanks for thinking that. It gives me more credit than I am due. Let's face it. I play on Easiest or Easy in most of these games. Nevertheless, you are always supportive of my trials and tribulations.

And Dark_Avenger, yes. When I win that 2nd Scn of 1st Punic War I will probably be celebrating with so many beers that my message of joy to this forum is unreadable. And until that time, I promise I won't talk about it.

And as far as Hill Country - I am going to keep playing it in between water map games. (I love Narrows...) I'm not a quitter. It just requires a different set of strategies. (But for me I love those games involving the water. Maybe that is because I am a Pisces! )

Talk about it anytime, for hints or else!

see ya!

Hi Sara,

Quite agree with Dark_Avenger there, and I didn't think you were playning at hardest, simply that you stumbled on the hardest map type to master (when you have played almost nothing else for some time, small islands suddenly aren't so easy anymore though). Nor did I suggest that you should quit the game - I feel very badly used here - after all those hints I gave you dare suspect me of something like that? *sobs*

But, Hill Country's my favourite map. I hate water maps because my opponent ALWAYS outbooms me with fish and my poor Mace hoopers/STs get wasted. In Hill Country they can't do this and resort to hunting. They always panic when they run out of gazelle and berries and they still need to hit tool. I however find Hill Country the easiest because it's the closest RM setting to a DM......
