Topic Subject:Quiz Time: Most Played Civ Ever in RoR
posted 01-30-01 12:58 PM ET (US)
I found a link on the Zone that has recorded statistics for every rated game ever played. It lists all 16 civilizations and then how many times each has been played--in rated rooms-- since the start of RoR so long ago.

My question is: guess the 3 most played and 3 least played civs in RoR in rated games. This accounts for DM's and RM's.

I will give the answer later.

Good luck guessing/debating!

Um can't give RM and DM sparately but together in order of all civs:

1. Hittite
2. Shang
3. Phoenician
4. Minoan
5. Assyrian
6. Persian
7. Carthaginian
8. Roman
9. Yamato
10. Egyptian
11. Sumerian
12. Greek
13. Choson
14. Palmyran
15. Macedonian
16. Babylonian

SUrprises: Choson at 13! With all those Chosn Wars, impossible. Persian 6! God, DM is failing.

Cheater, Cheater....LOL

Anyways Hittite has been played double the times of Shang in second place. Hittite has been played more than Egyptian, Sumerian, Greek, Choson, Palmyran, Macedonian, and Babylonian COMBINED!

Hittite, Shang, Phoenician, and Minoan account for close to 52% of the Total.

Babylonian actually really shocked me being last. With a strong tech tree they are solid/average on all maps in RM and DM I thought.

Anyways numbers look like this:

TTL Games Played: 2,311,608

1) Hittite 479,620 20.7%
2) Shang 272,821 11.8%
3) Phoenician 239,174 10.3%
4) Minoan 209,660 9.1%
5) Assyrian 174,467 7.5%
6) Persian 151,393 6.5%
7) Carthaginian 137,494 5.9%
8) Roman 107,057 4.6%
9) Yamato 93,639 4.1%
10) Egyptian 86,421 3.7%
11) Sumerian 85,062 3.7%
12) Greek 82,522 3.6%
13) Choson 69,217 3.0%
14) Palmyran 52,917 2.3%
15) Macedonian 39,283 1.7%
16) Babylonian 30,861 1.3%

Hmm... I knew that Hittite was popular, but this much...!? Some people only play them... they are narrow-minded! Hittite once in a while is good tho

Hittite - Slow, but strong naval bonuses, strong siege, good archery bonus. Eles and cents, and fully upgradeable scythes and HHAs.
Babylon - Slow, weak navy, no military bonuses. Weak scythes, only HAs instead of HHAs, no cents or eles.
While babylon has its strengths, I think it's best adapted as a team civ. As competitions seem to be mostly 1v1s, team civs get a far lower rating than they deserve, as do team players for that matter.
Now the real question is, how the *bleep* did greek become so popular?

Maybe these stats include random civ games, which might explain the high greek number. It's downright funny how many times you get stuck with greek when you play random civ, Blitz can tell you about that too.

Greek only comes before Mace, Palmy and Babs - not so good a score. Did they take into account that ROR appeared later? Then the Greek score is understandable - after all ppl first had to find out it was so weak. and of course ppl may have agreed to have several Greeks in one game - then it doesn't matter they're weaker than most. In Greek vs Greek, their poor archery doesn't matter so much, does it?

Hittite gets the large numbers due to being one of the best for DM games as well as RM games. There aren't any "weak" maps or setting for Hittite.

What shocked me with Babylon is with all of the balancing talk, Carth and Greek are at the top of the list. I know both are good DM civs. I would have never guessed Babylonian being the least played Civilization in rated games on the Zone.

Full use of bab's strengths requires patience, which most zone players don't seem to have.

I dunno. This just does not seem like it can possibly be correct. Maybe life is different in the rated rooms but in Plains about half of the games are DM and about half of the DM games are labelled ChoWar. My experience tells me that Choson is played more often than the 3% that this listing indicates.

Oh well, I guess it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Does the list say if this is just RoR or is this also supposed to include AoE?

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

Or maybe you're not. The problem with any survey is who participates in it. If you don't ask everyone, it's not representative.

This is a collection of statistics of every RoR game played in rated rooms. It doesn't account for any AoE games at all. It also doesn't include RoR games played in non-rated rooms.
