I started playing on the zone about 6 months after AoE came out. How about the rest of you?

I bought AoE when it came out. Unfortunately I didn't know about the Zone forever. I played over a network a lot in 98, but it wasn't until early 99 that I started playing on the Zone. In November of 99 was when I really started playing it 40+ hours a week, and this spring when I started playing in "expert" games.

40+ a week?? You could get a job with those kinda hours. I started playing on the zone about 9 months after AoE came out. Didn't put much effort into it either. I stunk real bad. I'm just now reaching the intermediate plateau, not really tho. Its because I never put much effort into it. I dove into scn design like nothing else tho. I love that. And now I love both. But I still hate DM.

I'm bigger on scenarios now too. Offline RM holds no challenge for me under any normal setts, and on the zone I either play games with friek setts or get whupped by experts. I think I'll spend some time with those experts though...get back into the game.

I've moved on to AoK, and now with the patch... + the 500Mhz comp... I'm stickin to AoK... better triggers... better AI, etc... GOD I love AoK... Now all I gotta do is save up 30 bucks and buy TC... gonna love that game

You should all know I have no life. Early this spring I had SEVERAL weeks over 40-50+ hours on the Zone. I played every night from 9 to 2 (sometimes even 5 A.M.) and on the weekends it was Saturday 10 A.M. to midnight or past, only taking breaks to eat while waiting in rooms to play. Sundays were like 3 P.M. to 10-midnight.

When I wasn't playing on the Zone, I was sleeping and dreaming of the game, or figuring strats out at work. Every morning my eyes kept getting darker, bigger rings around them as sleep deprivation was starting to show.

I downloaded all 1000 taunts, I had a binder with any and everything I could find about the game off the internet. That binder (which I haven't seen for months) had over 200 pages of strats/ideas/guides/ingfos. I read everything I could, and played with anybody that was good that I could learn from.

My wife thought (knew) I was crazy. She kept telling me I oughta go work as a game programmer/tester or something and make some money for this obsession. She watched me play a few games, and even played a game or two on the Zone trying to see what it was that could get me like this.

Now I am glad it is just a game to me. I play it often, but don't freak out when I play dumb and lose. It is a great game, and I wonder if I will ever come across another like it.

It is funny to look back and see my progression through the game. I played single player forever before Zone play. I played Islands only because I hated getting attacked (lol). I played some games on a network at work, but we didn't understand the game yet.

My first game on the Zone I played a kid who never got out of the Stone Age. I beat him and thought I was the greatest player on the planet, I really did. My very next game was classic....I played a pro who made a maze out of half the map complete with a wonder and tons of ballista towers. It was a reality check. I lost my next 10-15 games on the Zone, and was amazed when the fog was lifted at the end of the game to see how everybody grew so much.

I then found a little niche as Yamato on Highlands in AoE. I managed to be able to compete with high resources and reveal map. That was the setting I played every game.

In RoR, my Yamato tactics gave me some good victories on Hillz, but then came the Medit days...... full of fishies, huge navy battles, and an accelerated game pace. I had a lil strat that once I perfected I won like 99.9% of high resources, reveal, no tool attacks settings. I played hundreds of games with these settings and was starting to be a "Rook Powerhouse". I was reluctant to move on because I could actually win with these settings, and I was used to getting crushes so much early on in my "career".

Once I was getting bored with these settings, I started experimenting with the "no reveal" thing. Learning to explore brought a whole new dimension to the game, and it took me a while to get it. I played Conti, Hillz, and Medit.

Hundreds, maybe even thousands of games later I feel like I have seen and tried every tactic I can think of. The thing that is funny is I keep playing the game, trying to get better...smarter, and still think there are new strats out there.

Anyways sorry for the babbling.

BlitzkreigComin:
Do you try new civs and units, to find ways of using them that didn't seem possible? That's how the minoan boat boom came to be. An innocent young rookie tried making tons of cheap boats with this "slow civ with great compies", and BOOM! The assy rushers were wiped off the map. Next thing you know, he came up with the dock block, found the phoenie wood bonus, and a few other boat-related things.

Some possibilities:
1. persian - cav rush, fast bronze and TC boom to a fast iron, maybe palmy tribber or hittite navy as ally
2. palmy - lots of options here, from phoenie-like iron fastbooms to early bronze rushes and whatever
3. mace+babs - babs runs to tool and "tucks in" mace ally with walls and towers then starts tribbing, mace stays in stone for a while building up econ (without worries of getting tool or cav rushed) then comes out with killer hoplite/compie/ST combo (with a few cavs for raiding) to crush all opposition. Both stay on land all this time, rather than spend wood on an expensive boat war to defend equally expensive FBs. Bab and mace can both iron if there's some fight left, and fill each other's gaps nicely.
4. sumie - Again stay on land, in bronze you can expand to a huge farming operation with all the wood you saved by not fighting the boat war. Your STs shoudl flatten compies nicely, while your overflowing granaries in iron will allow you to mass-produce war eles, with plenty of food left over for superunit upgrades. May work well as a tribber in a combo maybe with persian, or with mace+babs in a 3v3.
5. assy - Yes, the good old CA rush civ. In this case though, I'd recommend exploring their other possibilities. They're as fast as yammy, but they can camel rush instead of cav rushing. You can do popov's cav/camel/CA combo. You can have an ally slingshot you to iron so you can rush on land and sea with horse archers and fire galleys.
6. choson - I know, they're slow and their bronze sucks, but if you tower like mad (towers in a network of triangles, every tower should have 2 others within 5-6 tiles) and keep a few anti-siege units handy, you might be able to survive to iron. A network of those towers (from a single stone mine!) can stop even 2 dozen egyptian scythes. Once there you could throw "Mr Cheap" double hp long swordsmen all over the map, with towers, helos, priests and horse archers as backup.

Anyway, just a few thoughts.

hey, I've had a computer for only about 1.5 yrs, and I know tons about windows/linux and related software, a little about hacking, a quickly growing lot about web programming, a moderate amount of graphics stuff, a bit about games, quite a bit about the online economy, a lot about hardware, and a pinch of programming. I dare say it comes easy to my generation. I think back and say to myself, surely I've had a computer for longer than that...

Anyway, I've never played the game longer than 8 hours for sure, and the only time I come close is when a lot of hours are spent on a few good games.

Speaking of good games, I went in a 3v3 up against Blitz at the zone today...lost, but it took him 2 hours to win.

But seriously, I can't believe we are supposed to have such a short attention span. How do believers of that explain whatever it is that I wrote above?

I played on a mud for about 30 hours straight once. The funny thing is, some people were there before and after me!

Hey Mule:

That was a great game last night. In fact that was one of the better games I have had this week. The game was up for grabs for quite a while until my Scythe kinda ruined everyone's day on your team.

That was the first time in a long time I was able to fight at 3-4 different battles at the same time. My team was able to integrate pretty well and I actually got to play a little Iron Age warfare for once.

Too bad about the low 175 pop limit. It is a bummer having 25-30 stables and only being able to build one out of each of them. I was hoping to flood your team with 50+ scythe. LOL

Anyways, see ya on the Zone soon. Hopefully other forumers will play also. RoR is a lot of fun to play! Especially with friends!

I've been around computers for about 5/6 years and had my own for about 4 of those and probably don't know half of what you guys know. I've been diving in recently because I'm upgrading and have caught the bug. Now I can't read enough comp mags and articles etc. I hope to catch up. Someone finnally gave me a clear explanation on a what a chipset is tonight too. 10 hrs? The longest I've ever played a single game was 5 hours. I've spent entire days and weeks in the scn editor if that counts. But never online gaming or RMing. My eyes can't take it. And I do have a life and girlfriend in the process too.

Wow - I haven't been here for ages. I signed up here around September 1998 - that's about when I started playing the game.

hiyas aoe just visiting on a lazy day.

I understand totally the aoe addiction! A little over 2 years ago I downloaded the aoe demo because a chess partner said I should "give it a try". I went straight to the zone and started mp...god did I suck at aoe!

I remember RoR was released a few days later and I bought the ror cd, however I played mostly aoe.

At the time I worked nights and had *WAY* to much time on my hands. Total freedom to play aoe from dusk to dawn...aoe is crack! I loved it

best regards from Tenaciti/sai_so friend of aoe
