Topic Subject:First Greek Level problem
posted 10-19-00 03:17 PM ET (US)
I've played the learning levels and went on to the Glory of Greece levels and am having the darndest time with the first level "Land Grab"... Maybe I'm not "grabbing" the land fast enough. I just can't get everything started before the other armies come and kick my butt!
Where to build the town center? I've tried the West, the East and the center all to no avail. Can someone kick me in the right direction instead of letting me get my butt kicked again?
By the way, when will the walkthroughs be posted? I can't get to any of the walkthroughs. Shows an error/page not found.
(At least I'm still ahead of my son in the game!)

I had some trouble with that one too ...
go to the right, you'll find a lake there with some shorefish. Build your TC near that and your barracks beside it (yes, that's the first things you build).
Then have some villagers shorefish and the rest woodcutting. Try to keep your clubbers close - you don't want to confront enemies now. DON'T make more villagers or clubbers, save your food for the upgrade. Build houses and a dock then some fishing boats. Upgrade asap and from then you should be able to manage.
Good luck

If all else fails use 'home run'

You mean if all else fails you can abandon the game and go for a walk

Well, that explains a lot.

At hardest you need to do things differently:
* Move your group to the top right hand corner. There's a lake really teeming with fish. Build a dock there.
* Then move along the border of the map till you come across a small lake and then build the TC on top of the next cliff you find - that's practically inaccessible. Build some houses then start woodcutting with all your villagers - make sure they don't cut through the line of trees for then you lose your natural defense.
* Build FBs for food and get the upgrade to Tool Age.
* Build a granary (don't bother to find berries, you can't fight yet) and research small wall. Wall in a good area (the place for your wall will suggest itself, don't make your living room too small of course) and build an archery range and more FBs (I finished with 9 or so). Upgrade to axemen. Build a pit and research toolworking and armor for infantry.
With your huge econ you can now build many axers and archers to attack the Dorians.

You can fill out the details, perhaps you must restart once or twice (if you are spotted by the Dorians soon you may get attacked too early).

I think Peter is correct. There is a lake nearby with quite a few fish. Start there and try to avoid conflict until you are stronger. Knock yellow out first and take over yellow's area and resources. Continue the build-up and eventually you will be strong enough to tackle red.

It is possible to win by directly confronting the red enemy. Walk right into the middle of his area and throw down your town center. You will have to expect pretty much constant fighting with your clubbers and with your villagers. The villagers will have to fight sometimes and gather sometimes. It is a close fight but red can be held off. He keeps coming but you can slowly turn the tide. I have done this but it is not something that I could have done when I was a beginner.

For a beginner the lake to the east is the best bet.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
