Just as the title implys, what AoE (not RoR, some people don't have it) units save your sorry bottom in the beginning of the game, before you had a chance to put an army together? For me, light cavalry. Four of 'em, with extra attack and armour upgrades (upgraded while they fight) will always do the trick for me. If the civ can't get cavalry? ...I'm screwed.

Well i havent found a unit that saves me, all they do is just hold back MANO's men long enough to get maybe 1 villy away, but he dont last long either
FACE IT! I SUCK AT RM!

hehe, but on DM... its the eles. with 10 eles ive stoped frankish palidin rush's. people painting castles right next to my tc. If i can get 1 castle up before my villys die then ill most likely be alright. (opps thats not aoe is it)

What do you mean by FBs? i can only think of fishing boats. Yep, those fishing boats sure keep the enemy at bay

Don't do DM, but on RM towers and archers take care of Tool and Bronze rushes by the CP. Composite Bowmen are my favourites. For those with RoR, Slingers, if you can make them, work well in the early stages and they're cheap.

Are we talking about AoK or AoE/RoR?

Well, sticking to AoE only, it's still composite bowmen if the civ has them. Otherwise short and broadswordsmen with as many upgrades as possible make good all-rounders.

I wonder if that's what the queen meant... compies and swordsmen are rather slow and it takes some time before you get them. so you need an army of them alll over the place to be any use. And she meant something to use before she got that.
I can only think of upgraded axemen in early Bronze if you can't get cavs - not exactly the start of the game, to be sure. Personally, I think cavs are weak against archer rushes.

Kavil:
Explanation: in AoE with minoan, FBs are what helps me get a horde of compies a full minute before assy gets the wheel... so my rear end doesn't need saving. A few early (while assy are still in tool) cavs and a scout (for LoS) can keep them "busy" while I research, too.

To Peter

Well yes, I guess swordsmen do take time, if we're talking that early then watch towers, axemen and even ordinary bowmen can cause damage. If you get a chance to give them some range, armour or attack increase so much the better.

I'm talking about units that has saved your town many a time, that you made in a minute, when your enemy sends over a ST or two.
Me? I stink when it comes to compies; mine end up being pounded into the ground by ST's when i look away for a minute to make another farm or something.

FBs equal Fishing Boats???
Oh, I use them allot, usually I have seven fishing boats and then if more that 3 get destroied then I build more, usually at the end of the game I have 1 or 2 fishing boats left- although my food stockpile maybe huge...

I have to say that light cavs( usually multi perpace), then hoplites (on the defencive), and then stone throwers (at the front lines)

Kavil:
A well-placed wall can help a lot. It gives you more time to train the necessary defenses.

My games used to go like this:
1. Run for a fast bronze while making many FBs, build a wall in tool with 2-3 villies around my territory. (using chokepoints as much as possible)
2. Research compies and other upgrades once bronze is reached.
3. Make compies or cavs/camels if wall is attacked.
4. Once the attack is repelled, move the army out where the enemy came in and rebuild that piece of wall, then go attack what is now probably a defenseless enemy. (no military units left standing around as ST-bait)
5. Steadily work your way to iron repeating step 3 and 4 as needed. Usually after 2 repelled rushes, assy CA-users resign without even having been attacked yet.
