My husband and I are trying to link up our PCs to play against each other (good for the marriage!). We have a null modem cable between our two COM1 ports. However, it never recognizes either computer or finds any games to join. We don't know enough of the technical stuff to work out how to make the connection. Do we have to make changes to any of the settings or is there other software the we need? Can anyone help?

com1 is used for your mouse. try using com 2 or 4, but not while using a modem. If you want to be online together, you will have to get a couple nic cards and a cable.

com3 will conflict with your mouse too. 1 and 3 share resources and so do 2 and 4. I hope this helps.

that port in the back can only hook up to 2 or 4 anyway, and it is usually used for an external modem, thus the sharing. I don't know why 1 and 3 are shared, except to reserve motherboard resources.

At work we had to actually install network cards in the computers and get a hub. Seems like the package was around 90 bones. If you get the serial thing to work please let me know.

A) Not all mice are serial mice and thus not all of them use a Com port

B) Are you absolutely certain that it is a "Null Modem Cable"? Null Modem Cables require the send and recieve wires to be crossed. Check Windows device manager to see what com port both of the serial ports are on and have RoR use the appropriate port. Should work fine
